Probably come up before but a nice review of the GS1200 in' Ride' magazine at the moment and they recommend using 'Super Unleaded' fuel rather than standard leaded in these models (assume inc Adv) for better economy and performance? Has anyone any views or recomendations on this please? Thanks, Sam

GS 1200 fuel

Riders Manual states 95 Roz/Ron Super unleaded. So Ride is correct.
The manual also mentions 91 Roz/Ron regular unleaded as well.
I always use 95 Ron Super unleaded.
The compression ratio for the GS is 11:1.

My R1200RT has a 12:1 compression ratio and the recommendations are 98 Ron Super Plus (premium unleaded) but 95 Ron (super unleaded) can be used but results in a drop of about 5hp!

I believe the GS was designed to be able to use lower grade (91 Ron) in areas you can't get 95 Ron.

Safe riding,
Mike

I do believe that what we call standard unleaded in the UK IS 95 RON is it not? Super unleaded is 97 RON or higher (some places sell it as high as 99 RON but very few do)

The engine can take as low as 91 RON but this isn't encouraged and should only be used if there's nothing else available.

Used my GS on 98/97/95 RON in UK and 91 RON in Australia.

The engine is still working.:nenau

Runs sweeter on the better grades, but its fine on even the poorer ones due to knock sensors and fine control of ignition advance and injection timing, you can still ride briskly without fear of engine worries.

they may recommend superplus ul,but some countries dont got that stuff no more,so regular 95ul,is highly recommended over here:thumb

Correct, Standard unleaded in the UK is 95 RON and super is 98 RON I think the highest fuel rating you can get in the UK just now is BP Ultimate which is 102 RON

So what is the best to use - 95 or 98 RON?

20w50 :blast sorry wrong thread :augie you probably wont get much out of 98 RON on a stock bike but if its 08-09 it will be more likely to use the extra octane with the extra compression. I think its a requirement on the 2010 to get the extra power. Manual states 95 so that's what I use. By the way using too high an octane fuel actually decreases performance on an engine that isn't meant to use it. Higher octane = less volatile = less power unless its tuned to a point where it needs the knock resistance then it = more power.

R12GS (12/'07). According to manual 95 is fine, and the engine can cope with 91.
But I have the distinct impression my bike is less viby with 98 octane, so that's what it gets. Perhaps this doesn't make any sense technically. It just feels smoother, and that's reason enough for me.

Just my 2p worth but I found 95 ron smoother as it gives a longer softer "bang" and the GS was more viby at high speed with 97/98 ron

The only difference I have noticed between 95 and 98 on my '08 GSA is my wallet is slightly emptier on one of them. I used to get more miles/gallon when I put the 98 into my old Mondeo as I was told it could adjust the ignition timing to make better use of the fuel. But I'm a tosser so what do I know.:nenau

Thanks Marki - This confirms what I thought! High octane only works on a high performance engine, and is wasted on a boxer that can easily run on 91 RON.

Which issue of Ride was this in, what page?

It makes lots of sense the same way people are buying a £30 accelerator module and saying their bike is a fire breathing monster now and it has 10% better fuel economy at the same time. Its all about perception and your mind. You think it is better there for you feel its better. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that either, its what makes individuals. I bet you if someone drained your bike and filled it with regular and you didn't know it you would be none the wiser though. I think you would notice going to 91 RON though.

Are you calling all the 30 or so Tossers, who have tried this £27 device delusional? And they have all imagined the difference that it has made to the performance and drivability of their GS’s.

Bollox. So, what qualifies you to make this spurious comment? Have you tried one then? I don’t see your road test report on this forum.

Ok. Back to fuels.

I've not noticed any difference in response or economy using 98/99 RON stuff on my 08.

Was very different with my Varadero (carbed) that gave about 15 extra miles per tank on 98RON. The Guzzi also showed a marked preference for the expensive stuff by running much smoother.

V POWER

Shell v power is 99 ron and whilst i agree it probably makes no diff to performance on a boxer twin, the cleaning properties of the fuel are excellent and keep the carbon deposits down,so over long term better for your bike.......:rob
