Hello
Can someone please tell me how do I know that my fuel warning light works on my 2001 1150GS? The manual states that when 2 bars are on the gauge the fuel light should illuminate, but it hasn't. Should it come on with the ignition like the oil and charging lights?
I just didn't want to run out while waiting for it to come on .Cheers.

It should come on and stay on. When mine is getting low it will sometimes come on when the bike is on its side stand then go off when it's upright.

Fill up… set your trip to zero…. Fill up again at 180 miles……( once in France I saw it go to 205 miles before the petrol station came into view- )

This policy has served me well for 40 years………

I’ve never run out of fuel.

Same, not on at two bars until resting on side stand. Mine only comes on when upright and down to one bar.

Figure out your very own bike's fuel warnings before you need to know:
1) Fill up and zero the trip.
2) Ride until your gauge shows one or two bars.
3) Strap a gallon can of petrol to your rack and continue riding, ensuring that you're within 30 miles or so of a petrol station from now on.
4) Observe how many miles on the trip when the gauge shows no bars, when the light comes on, and when the engine stops.
5) Carefully lay the bike on its right hand cylinder head and give it a bit of a shake.
6) Pick it up again and re-start it (might take a bit of turning over, but it will start).
7) Ride until it conks out again and note the mileage.
8) Pour the gallon from the can and re-start the bike.
9) Ride home via the petrol station and fill up.

You now know, and can in future be confident how many miles you have left when the light comes on and how far you can ride on the 'secret reserve'.

Simples!

Thank you for all your replies. I just wondered if my light even worked, I have just clocked 190 miles , have 2 bars and wondered if my light worked or there was a way of testing it. It will probably come on ,on the way to the petrol station.

.

That’s because it doesn’t. On all my bikes the warning light comes on shortly before the last bar disappears.
