Hi,

Is there a view on what engine oil the G650X likes?

Thinking about Putoline semi-synth.

Thanks in advance,

Ian.

Ive just put Q8 10w40 semi in mine. Not sure re the wet clutch requirements so just to be safe went for the bike specific version. Not the cheapest stuff around but it doesn't take that much (2.3l)

Thanks for the replies :thumb2.

Will go for semi-synth 10/40.

As said on here many times..... it does depend on the mileage you are at.

Most recommend running quality mineral oil in this engine for the first 6000 mile..... this allows all the engineering to bed in..... thereafter it does not really matter what you put in providing it hits the books minimum codes.

So I guess its down to the mileage.

Its a Rotax engine dating from the 80's using tractor and lawnmower technology. Just chuck any old shite in.

will it run on shite ?

thought was the modern engines with 30k intervals that can run on shite
think the older stuff need a bit more TLc unless you like stripping down engines at the weekends.

I must admit theres a lot of useless info on oils

seems some of the older oils dont like cat exhausts either, ones with high phospahate mineral content I think, if youre engine burns any in the first place

this is my first opportunity to jump in on an oil thread, very exciting.

This is my first bike with a wet clutch--how important is it to use moto-specific motor oil?

It is better to use bike specific oil as most car oils contain friction modifiers which can cause wet clutches to slip. The old 604 air-cooled rotax single was particularly prone to this, I have not heard either way on the water cooled engine. I have read that diesel oils are OK but I prefer to play safe and use bike specific.

Thanks much for your response, but I should have been more specific: I anticipate being in places (Siberia, Mongolia) where I will not be able to find bike-specific oil, so I have to choose between putting in whatever I can find, or bringing it with me. I have thus far assumed that I will put in whatever I can find but am not sure what damage, if any, this could cause to the wet clutch?

asked a guy at Opie

You need a 10w-40 for your bike and here is our selection.

The best oils there are the Silkolene Pro 4 and Comp 4, Motul 300v, Redline, Amsoil and Castrol Power 1 Racing. The Motul 5100 and Silkolene Super 4 are good cheaper alternatives. If your bike is still under warranty, I would use one of the Castrol oils as BMW can be very awkward with warranties. Even if an oil is superior to what they suggest for a bike, they can fail warranties if one of their recommended oils isn't used.

How far are you planning on going? Walter Colebatch has done 85,000km, mostly in siberia with 10,000km oil changes. He had the engine apart at 45,000km and everything looked like new and was still within manufacturers tolerances. If you change the oil before you leave will you need to change during the trip?

If you need to change, don't want to carry and can't get bike oil I would go for 10/40 diesel oil if you can get it.

I won't be doing Colebatch-scale trips and don't anticipate needing to change during the trip, but expected that I'll have to top up every now and then (just bought the bike so am not yet sure about how much oil it uses). I guess I could just bring a quart along, that would hopefully be enough for several thousand kilometers.

I would imagine that diesel oil would be readily available most everywhere, but wouldn't have thought to use it on the bike. I'm rather clueless on oil issues, could you explain why 10/40 diesel would be better than 10/40 normal oil (or is it just no worse)?

hi tom,
i really don,t think you,ll be needing any top up oil.I changed my oil in tashkenk after 6000mls. and riding in 40c + heat and it didn,t need any topping up.
last year while riding with walter on my xt660 i ran for a few days on around 20% water 80%oil then cheap russian diesel oil for around 2000mls. that was 5000mls ago and it still runs great and doesn,t use any oil.

Tom I use full synthetic moto specific oil ... on the one occasion when I had to change oil without access to motorcycle oil, I used same spec (10w40) mineral oil. Diesel engine oil or petrol engine oil shouldnt matter, but if the oil is not moto specific, I would strongly recommend mineral oil (mineralka) only.

But change it more frequently. :thumb
