The other piece of paperwork that I needed was my International Driving Permit, as my last one expired a couple of months ago.
Those of you who followed my attempts to outwit the Sudan border authorities with a home made tryptique or Carnet de Passage will know I enjoy a good craft project. However my attempts to amend the dates on my old IDP got the same reaction from SWMBO as my home made CdP got from the Sudanese authorities...something along the lines of 'No way José'.
Now I have rarely been asked for my IDP...other than by a crafty cop in Ghana who stopped me and asked for my license. When I produced my UK license (as I usually do) he grinned and said: "You must show your IDP!" His grin probably reflected the expectation of a bribe - so he was disappointed when I reached into my pocket and fished out the required IDP!!
So I wandered down and queued at my local post office. When i got to the head of the queue I was informed that RM no longer issue Internation Driving Permits...in fact they stopped 3 years ago so I must have been one of the last to get mine under their auspices.
They told me I have to go to some obscure Pay Zone shop to get one. The nearest one was 10 miles away in Alton...so I girded my loins and founbd it...a rather seedy bottle shop in a back street. But the guy there knew his stuff and for the princely sum of £5.50 I was ready to ride...result!
