And on the technical front I have toured the autoparts and plumbing section of Port Sudan and located this PTFE tape for about 40 pence.

Have removed the string solution now and applied PTFE tape to seat and plug.

Without the string the vertical movement in the seat is very noticeable.... anyone know if this is usual or is the seat normally firmly fixed in place?

Apart from that I have enjoyed the mooching around the town. I realise that yesterday's ride was 600kms which is a lot on Sudanese roads, especially combined with petrol scavenging along the way and tending to spraying oil.

I didn't break my cardinal rule of not riding at night... But it was sunset when I got to town. So the rest is doubly appreciated .

Port Sudan has a middle Eastern feeling already with fruit juice stands and Yemeni restaurants, against a faded backdrop of British colonial architecture.

(The old British Club is now the Police Headquarters!).

I am conscious of being, now, literally at the edge of Africa and in theory will sail away from it tomorrow night.

Ah Is it the insert to the rocker cover that is moving Simon?

Or the centre filler cap ?

For that assembly to be moving would indicate either something is badly worn

Or there is excessive pressure (and possibly oil level i.e. Reduced crankcase volume) in the engine

Options ... Easy one! leave the bike on the sidestand for 10 mins when you come in at end of ride then put it on the centre stand Drop off the bash plate and drain oil to container

Put Back ONLY 3 and a 1/4 litre which should see you about half full on the sight glass Pour rest into a container for use to top up (Obviously if its a dirty environment or very sandy where you drain it ?? a Good filtering before placing it in your sealed container !)

Crankcase pressure if not via oil overfill ?? Check that Breather at the right by the airfilter to Crankcase upper is not trapped

It could be that the many miles of use in the sands have just abraded the sealing lip in the rocker cover ??

Another "Fix" could be to clean it all again and put a dollop of silicone sealant (that will harden up ) around the area where the O ring sits? It might be enough to stop it from oscillating too much

Yes definitely the base that is moving.

Not overfilled... Both last oil changes were by BMW specialists who were very specific to me about the amount of oil they put in. (In each case, to the upper level of but not above the sight glass).

And now it is at bottom of sight glass due to losses.

The oil hole does not show signs of abrasion.

Given the o ring is narrower than the channel in the base in which it sits, does that suggest one of :
a defective o ring or
excessive pressure?

Hard to say without being there But I think I might be looking a bit harder at crankcase ventilation or possibly the wrong o ring ??

Your last suggestion triggers a vague memory of the Nairobi mechanic saying "someone has put silicone here and the oil has damaged it" when he fitted the new o rings. So I am guessing that when he removed it he didn't think to replace it... or replaced it with something inadequate. Surprises me at two levels
1. These guys are BMW experts and were recommended to me by two Nairobi bikers... One German and one Scot.
2. In the 15 years I have owned the bike I don't remember being told after a service that this (the silicone seal) had been done.

So started the day by doing a 5 point turn in the marble lobby to get the bike out, after topping up the oil level (no-one batted an eyebrow!)

Following one suggestion (Posh Pete?) I jury rigged something to stop the oil plug jiggling around...I will soon see if that helps or hinders on the short (50kms) ride to Suakin port.

Simon Luvvy You may have overdone the Duct tape!!

Try splitting it in two Lengthwise about half width (It does tear quite well like that) and find a bit of wood or a pebble that can sit in the area on top of or beside the filler cap All you want to do is keep the cap/insert pressed down to prevent leakage

The cylinder is gonna be hotter than the rocker cover so I think Jay is worried about it melting / burning.....
If you remove the part that’s on the cylinder fins, and leave the bit around the rocker cover, you’ve a better chance of not torching your awesome steed

Just a thought, and I appreciate your logistical issues, but is there any way of getting exhaust tape wrapping over it ???

I bodged a repair years ago and it held nicely until at better aide.

Hope you get sorted anyway
