I have a garmin 550 which I have just downloaded a upto date map version.
when trying to plan a route of any distance it now keeps telling me memory full unable to plan route, anybody got any ideas why ??? John

From the factory the 550 is right at the upper limit of it's memory capacity.

Updating the maps can often tip it over the edge.

Hook the 550 up to your PC.

Access the Garmin drive.

Delete ALL the language files EXCEPT ENGLISH.

Delete ALL the help files EXCEPT ENGLISH.

This should leave the Garmin with enough spare memory.

Tip given to me by Garmin. It worked for me and I am a complete IT illiterate.

I've tried that and I still get problems over 5-600 miles

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

It seems that all the relevant mapping data for the route that you are
trying to follow is in the Garmin, so it is likely that this message is
simply appearing because the route that you are trying to follow has
more instructions involved than the Zumo can hold within its memory at
any one time. When the Zumo calculates a route, it will attempt to
define all the instructions that you will need over the course of that
route. As the Zumo can only hold a certain number of instructions at
any one time, for especially long routes you may find in some
circumstances that messages like this can appear.

There are two things that I would recommend trying that may help your
Garmin Zumo in general.

The first is to install (or re-install) the latest software on your
device. The easiest way to do this is by making use of the WebUpdater
application. WebUpdater is a free application that can be downloaded
and installed on the computer. It guides you through the process of
updating the unit software in a Garmin device. WebUpdater can be run at
any time to check and install applicable Unit Software updates in a
Garmin device.

Are you asking it to calculate 500 mile plus, routes? If so, no wonder it is struggling. The 660 does, too. It sends a message saying it has done the first part and will complete the second part as the journey progresses. Garmin are also right in that the 550 can only hold a finite number of instructions.

From experience, it is not a good idea to put really long, complicated routes into a single route file. It slows the whole calculate / recalculate thing into a tizzy. Break it up into bite sized chunks, based for instance on perhaps two 250 mile bites. You ain't gong to ride 500 miles without at least one fuel stop, so you do not need the whole thing in one go. If you are doing it all on motorways, you do not need a GPS anyway.
