when i'm using the basemap on my quest ( i just wanted to try it out to see how it would work without the city navigator maps), the position arrow doesnt seem to be located correctly abouve the road. (ie its off to one side).

I have the lock to road feature turned on in the menus, do i need to adjust any other settings, like map datum, or is it always like this with the basemap on a quest??

Thanks in advance

The basemaps are quite low accuracy... Only meant to give you a "taste" of mapping GPS so that you will go out and buy a "proper" map...

They do the job just fine when zoomed out a long ways though...

Its been posted about before and a few mentioned that in Morrocco, it was better than nothing - which is probably right ... but you're in Gateshead.

When I got my first GPS I tried it out for a few days with just the basemap - because I didn't know how to downbload the maps. To put it bluntly it was effin useless, because it couldn't even guide me to the nearest village let alone through Europe. As an absolute last resort its better than nothing - but only just, and you may as well just draw a map on the back of an envelope and sellotape it to the tank.

Hence it's name - basemap. :augie

cheers for the replies :thumb2

My reason for using it the other day was to see how easy it was to navigate on main roads with just the basemap. I'm planning a europe trip in the summer, and if i can navigate motorway sections on the basemap then i'll not load the detailed map tiles for those sections, giving me more space to load areas of europe i will be spending the most time.

I did that when I had a gpsv as the memory in them only just coped with a couple of areas and it worked fine to Germany and around where I was based.

I can see what you're trying to do, but I don't know if it will work. When I was playing with my SPIII with just the basemap (as I said I just asked it to direct me to the nearest village) and the directions were so wierd to the point that we had to totally ignore them. In one case it just asked me to turn left (as it happened into some woods - no road - just woods) as it just drew a line between the village and the nearest point on the "A" road. My point is, if you're in any doubt whether you need to turning off the main road make sure you've got the detailed map downloaded - or a pocket atlas handy. :thumb

When I first got my 60C, I intended to live without the expensive Europe mapping... I had Metroguide, which allowed PC determined routes, downloadable to my old Vista... and I figured I could use the basemap for on the fly routing over the motorways....

A month or two later, we were Trying to get to the Loire from Holland... motorways all the way... perfect test...

It routed us through downtown Paris! Skipping over the obvious bypass routes... A bit later on, I was on a main road, and it wanted us to turn off onto, then double back onto a minor road that clearly wasn't going to get us there quicker...

Add to that the fact that Mapsource is smart and won't let you download complete routes to the 60C as it did the Vista.... and

When we got back, I bought City Select. World of Difference.
