Garmin StreetPilot 2720

And an iglledypiggledy cable type thing for holding on to the slippery blighter when it decides to go for a walk :P

I've been thinking about that...and as far as I remember, there isn't anywhere on the Quest that I could have put one......that's what it needs though, a little loopy indent like you get on a mobile phone to stick a small cable or bit of fishing wire through to tether the bastard.

Still haven't heard from Touratech :(

Nope can't see one and there isn't one on the 2610 either - and I've just started using the Touratech mount for it :yikes

Think I'd better change it for a lockable one, yours wasn't lockable was it? If it was then its back to the Garmin mount for me :(

you should be able to bodge up some kind of secondary restraint with velcro or a sticky tie wrap base.

Confused

Does anybody know when the 2720 will be available in Australia? I was about to purchase a 2610 or a Quest when I read this thread and am now I am even more confused. Any help on this matter would be welcome.

... I for one would prefer Garmin to spend some time adding European campsites etc to their mapping instead of treating us Euros as second-class users compared to US customers!

Mike:

Garmin does not make or develop any of the cartography (maps) used by the GPSRs. The cartography comes from Navteq, who are the 800 pound gorilla of the electronic cartography industry. Interestingly enough, their head office is in... The Netherlands.

(referring to proximity alerts) ...it is technically possible on the SP26xx series but it is more of a marketing question.

Hi Burnie:

I don't think it is technically possible to allow for proximity alerts on the 26xx series, because there are some quite fundamental differences between the 26xx and 27xx concerning how the internal memory (not map storage memory) in the GPSR is allocated.

But - if it can be done (which I sort of doubt), then I expect Garmin will introduce it via software update. They have always been very good about supporting new features on existing GPSR's whenever it has been technically possible to do so. A good example of this is the support for custom route preferences that was first introduced on the 26xx series. After that software had fully matured on the 26xx, Garmin released free updates for the 276 and 296 to provide the same capability on those units.

The ultimate m/cycle GPS unit then will have the processor speed, proximity alerts and memory capabilities of a 2720, packaged in a quest style body for portability and ease of use but retaining and perjhaps improving on the customisation levels of the 26xx and quest range.

Now that would be good :thumb

Good? It would be freakin' amazing.

Right now, we have a bit of a dilemma: If we want traffic alerts (TMC), Gatso alerts, and lightning quick processor speed - plus 2 gigs of built in memory, and every map preloaded - then the 2720 is the unit to get.

If we want total control over the user interface customization (displays, what data is in what fields, stuff like that) - then, the 276 or 296 offers the most control.

Don't rule out the 26xx products yet, though. As long as the user doesn't need TMC support or Gatso support, the 26xx is a highly capable GPSR with a very fast processor and gobs of memory capability, and it is very much still a current product. To a certain extent, the introduction of the 2720 will help 26xx sales, because it will push down the prices of the 26xx products.

Don't stress too much judgeypoos.....mine has had some hard use, inc a fair bit of off-road, and now I know to look for it, it's evidently loose.......

I've also worked out that a small spring could be installed to close the catch properly and keep it back if it does work loose again when I get my new Quest.

Which won't be for a while looking at my finances :(

And no, it wasn't a locking one.

Short answer; probably never

Sensis, who provide the Australian autorouting mapping, catergorise a unit with a built in disk (or psuedo disk) differently for licensing purposes and charge a fair bit more.

Also, City Navigator Australia v6 is only 132 MB so there is not really a current need for it.

You have up to 2 GB on a SP2610 or
243 MB in a Aus model Quest or
up to 256 MB in a GPSmap 276C
so if it was me I would look at one of these current models.

Can anyone who uses a 2720 comment on whether or not it's possible to swap the mapping software, i.e. delete City Navigator US and install City Navigator Europe and vice-versa?

I'm currently looking for a GPS unit to replace my Streetpilot III which will allow me to navigate both in Europe and the US. Assuming that it is possible to swap maps in this way, I'm very tempted by the 2720, largely because of the Speed Camera Alert function.

I had a US 2610 and changing between the EU and US CN was the same as uploading a newer version of the maps to the 2610. Even easier if you buy yourself two cards with enough space for each. HTH.

Yes, I know but the 2720 has 2 Gb of solid state memory and comes with either the US or UK version of City Navigator preloaded.

So you can't update the supplied maps? Don't think Garmin will let that cash cow get away.

At the risk of labouring the point, that's what I'm trying to establish. I believe it should be possible as they also supply CN US v8 on DVD but I want to confirm before we splash out about £1K on two of 2720s.

Mr Schtum. I have PM'd you the e-mail address of a very helpful chap at Garmin. I found him brilliant during a previous query, and I'm sure he would be able to tell you if what you want to do is possible. :thumb

And I've PM'd you a thank you. I did it before I read this, hence my "cryptic" remark. Many thanks.
