2720 and Mapsource

Hi!

Anyone know if its possible to load routes made from the Mapsource-software on a computer, onto the 2720 unit? Or if the only way to programme routes is in the 2720-unit itself?

cheers Terje

Yup.. but you missed one thing.. screen size on Quest is a wee bit small.

It's not the size, it's what you do with it that counts ;)

Can anyone who uses a 2720 comment on whether or not it's possible to swap the mapping software, i.e. delete City Navigator US and install City Navigator Europe and vice-versa?

I'm currently looking for a GPS unit to replace my Streetpilot III which will allow me to navigate both in Europe and the US. Assuming that it is possible to swap maps in this way, I'm very tempted by the 2720, largely because of the Speed Camera Alert function.

Hello Schtum:

You can 'swap' maps (North America and Europe), however, to do this, you need to purchase the second set of maps, in order to get an unlock code for the second set.

In actual fact, you won't be swapping the maps, because the mapset that came preloaded in the GPSR will always remain there. What will happen is this: You purchase the second mapset, and then upload it into the spare cartography storage area, and it is then available for your use on the other continent.

There are two disadvantages associated with this - not sure if they will be significant to you or not, but you should know them. The first is that because the GPSR will only have one 'basemap' in it, you will not be able to zoom out past about a 5 km scale range when you are in the secondary area, because there will be no basemap present to draw the picture. The basemap is used to draw the screen picture at wider zoom levels because this allows faster graphics rendering.

The second disadvantage is that you won't be able to fit the entire contents of the second continent into the GPSR. You will probably be limited to about half a megabyte of maps - about 40% of the coverage for the second continent. I doubt that this will cause you any functional problem, though.

My guess is that the least expensive way of going about this would be to purchase the GPSR in the area you plan to spend the most time in (so as to get the basemap for it), then purchase the 'City Select' cartography for the second continent. If you intend to use the TMC function, I highly recommend that you get the European model GPSR, and then buy the CS cartography for North America.
