Is any EP90 gear oil suitable for the Gearbox and the FD . Is one better than the others ??

GL5 - Anti-foaming

Hi Spen,
GL5 grade has an anti-foaming additive in it - probably more important in the bevel box?? Some companies - eg Rock Oil - don't make a GL5 but Castrol etc are available from Halfords in GL5 spec.

Cheers ,i got sorted this morning .I had changed the gearbox oil last night and when i checked the bottle it said GL3/ GL4 so i got the correct stuff and changed it again along with the FD used a FUCHS semi synth 75/90 GL5 for both . :thumb

For future reference Halfords do several GL5 gear oils. I use the straight 90 (labelled as 'differential oil' from memory).

I just wish they'd package it in 1.2 litre bottle so you could do the gearbox and FD from one bottle

I read the diff takes 250ml of oil but i could only get around 200ml or so in according to the scale on the side of the container .turned the rear wheel and let the oil settle ,so is it 200 or 250 ml ??

Footnote

For a long time now I've been changing the bevel box oil at the same time as an engine oil change - ie 6000 miles.
i think a lot of others on here do the same - it's only a small amount of oil which has a hard time & bearing problems in the FD are common - just a thought.

Yeah mine was changed about 4000 miles ago and this time it was dark black ,i think for all it costs it"ll be done every engine oil change aswell , Is it 200 or 250 ml , i know just fill it up to the level bung ,like i said i read 250ml but i don"t think mine took as much as that ,was def a shade over 200 ml

I do the lot every 3000 (oil filter at 6000)..

Overkill? Probably - but oil is cheap, engines and gearboxes aren't.

That assumes the lines on the bottle are accurate. If it's full then I'd just leave it at that. You could always pour it into a more accurate jug first if it does worry you.

Just doing my FD and gearbox tonite , I make sure it's GL5 and buy 5 litres of the stuff . So enough for couple of changes . But I use a small bottle with pouring spout .

I realised after i"d put it in that the scale on the side of the bottle might not be accurate , next time like you say i"ll measure it out first then i will know exactly how much is in there . Its up to the threads on the filler bung so it has plenty .Again i assume it"s filled on the center stand as the side stand would allow more to be put in !!

the scale on the container is only a rough guide its not accurate just fill to bottom of the threads in the FD

there's usually a difference in capacity between filling for the very first time and doing a refill.
