gear change indicator

Just happened with mine this morning. No Nuetral light when ignition turned on. Had to hold in clutch to start. When riding, gear selection is correct but goes blank as soon as I clutch. Am ringing dealer tomorrow morning.

I have two 12s and one has that problem intermittently, the other does not. It doesnt bother me at all because I always leave the bike in gear when I stop so I'm used to pulling the clutch to start it.

Just started to get this problem on my March 05 GS, although I realise that it has been lurking in the background as I've occasionally had the engine cutting out when I put the sidestand down whilst in neutral. At the moment, 1st, neutral and 2nd only show when they feel like it, but 3,4,5,6 seem to be OK. Being a wimp, I don't tend to ride in the wet and being lazy I rarely clean it. I certainly haven't used a jet-wash on it.

I took a look at the sensor and the wire connector plug was almost all of the way out of the sensor socket. I've pushed it back in but haven't ridden it since although I'm still not getting 1,0 or 2 showing. I disconnected and reconnected the battery just in case it was a "reset" thing, but this didn't make any difference. I'll see how it goes next time I take it out, then I'll unplug it again and try the WD40 routine.

It's not a show stopper, as this is the first bike I've had with a GPI anyway, and it's not difficult to figure out if you are in neutral :bounce1

I don't suppose I'll get much sympathy from the dealer as it's outside the warantee period, but I might give it a try as I've only done around 4500 miles. Anybody know how much the positon sensor is and will the gearbox oil empy itself all over the drive if I take the sensor out :blast

I had the same problem. Whenever humidity get's close to the sensor, everything fucks up ...

I had this prob within the first 500 miles - it was very wet and I had been playing on Dartmoor! Dealer explained that it was a known problem and that the switch/sensor needed replacing for an upgraded unit. No probs since replacement (under warranty).

First time I've been out on the bike since my last post. Once I'd been up and down the gearbox once, the position indicator was back to normal. I don't know if pushing the connection plug home on the sensor has fixed the problem, or if its just decided it wants to play ball today. It's worth taking a look at the sensor plug though, as now I've pushed it home, I can't unplug it now so maybe it's only been partly connected since I got the bike.

This happened to me at approx 4500mi, now 6k later have not had any other problems. Per the dealer this is a common problem that results more from the location of the sensor than the sensor itself.
