Gear change noise.

Just a quick question. Does any one know how to get silent or atleast less noisy gear changes on a 2006 GS?
Iv tried preloading the gear lever, works to a degree.
Changing the gearbox oil for a heavier oil (Syntax 75-140) made no odds.
Faster gear changes made a bit of difference but again not a lot.
Any one got the secret answer?

Shifting too slow will crash the gears. Match the revs. Throttle blip on downshifts. Dip the clutch on upshifts like a semi clutchless shift.

All that is less noisy but its really ever quiet. Also try letting the clutch touch its bite point a bit quickly and marvel at the clunk from the FD gears. My 1997 Yamaha 900 with "boring" twin spar swing arm and solid driveshaft never crashed at the back end like the GS (nearly) always does. But its was never particularly quiet at gear shifting.

Check the gear shift linkage isn't too tight in its bushing where it passes through the frame, the GS is prone to collecting dirt in the bushing and making it tight. A strip and greasing sometimes smooths things out.

If it's not making noises, then there's something wrong with your GS

In all seriousness, for me the best is to only feather the clutch a few mm that seems to be the happy place.

No, just accepted that my gear changes are usually noisy. Sometimes though, for reasons unknown to me, changes are really slick and quiet. Riding without plugs, as I do when just popping into town, really shows just how clunky the gear changes usually are.
