Hi
my local bike shop was to get me in some gear oil Friday, it was then delayed until today and it is now rescheduled to next week.
I drained my gearbox and drive shaft over the weekend and I need to get some new gear oil asap (because its sunny).
Has anyone tried the gear oil in halfords. Here are the 2 that seem most suitable.

Thanks
P

Seem to remember that Halfords are owned by BP, or some such big corporation, and would therefore imagine their own brand stuff is okay.
As long as it meets the spec required it's okay.

I just looked for 75w\90. Is there something else I should be searching for?

Always used Castrol in my oilheads gearbox and FD.

Axle EPX 80W-90 is my choice. Halfords stock it.

I'm not sure they do anymore. I was looking in my local Halfords last week for some Castrol Axle EPX 80W-90 and it looks like they have stopped selling all Castrol oils. Halfords and Cosmo were the only brands visible.

Most of the independents around my area don't sell Castrol either because I was told that Halfords sold Castrol so cheep that no one could match them on price so stopped selling it. It is likely to take a long time for Castrol to trickle back into stock at the independents.

I've used halfords GL5 gear oil for years. Think it's called differential oil or something. Recall there is 80/90 and 75/90 variants. There are also some non-GL5 ones so make sure you're grabbing the right one.

Only use GL 5. There is a suspicion that my final drive meltdown in November of last year could have been due to GL 4 being added instead of GL5. Any motorfactor should have some good GL 5?

Thanks all, so the halfords own brand 75w/90 gl5 is what I wasn't.
I'll pick up some tomorrow

Before you part with a kings ransom at Halfords, try your local farm supplies store.

Agricultural equipment uses a wide range of oils and greases and they usually have a good range at competitive prices because farmers don't like parting with their hard earned subsidies (Just kidding , we all need farmers to keep us fed :comfort). As already noted the GL5 is the important bit and I got 5 litres of GL5 gear oil for £18 from my local farm store in Hereford.

If you have a Mole Valley farmers store near you you will see a fine display of agricultural Oils of all grades for all manner of purposes and Not expensive you are driving a very fine agricultural machine so treat it the the best.

just been to halfords and see they do a fully synthetic
oil 80/90 gl5 10.00 for 1 ltr . think the 80 figure is at the lower temp flow so the difference from 75/90 should not be a problem should it .

Hmmphh!!

I just paid £16 for a litre of Castrol 75W90 from Motorworks.

Mind you they also stock the rubber o-ring for the drain plug and I got it all overnight delivery :thumb2

This is for an LC although I can't believe the bevel gear (is it only FJR owners who call it the Pumpkin?) has changed too much over the years.

I pay 8 quid odd for Castrol 80W90 from my local repair garage. Motorworks are taking the mickey

Possibly true but there are others - Yamalube for example - who excel at mickey taking in pricing a litre of this stuff so I'm at least paying less than I used to
ISTR it was £45 a pop "but it'll do 3 services for you sir"
