Gear Shift Assist Pro

Get your dealer to reset the GSAP, as it should be smooth.

As others have said, you do have to be giving it the beans, to get the best from it.

I use Gear Shift Assist all the time.

Done 6500 miles using it.

Bloody brilliant.

Different bike (S1000XR) but downshifts are great -but upshifts do seem to have more 'surge' as the next cog engages, than I would expect?

I only use the upshift when I'm overtaking a line of traffic and on max acceleration.

(can't get too used to it as my R-1 has simple box)

It works fine on mine - two things to remember:

1) On upshifts make sure you are accelerating (not neural throttle) before attempting to use it.

2) On downshifts make sure the throttle is fully closed.

That's it on mine - works perfectly, even at moderate acceleration.

Steady throttle works well on mine on downshifts, in addition to closed throttle

Yup.

Be firm with that gear lever. If you're sloppy, it can cut the engine without you having changed cogs. Only happened to me once; had me a bit surprised. I also managed to change down two gears last week-end. That also surprised me. Operator error; I was tired. Not a warranty claim matter, though. My mistake.

Totally agree with this. Pin it for the upshifts...zero throttle for the down. I love it.

Must be me, but it i just cant get used to not using a clutch after so many years using one and it feels like am damaging the gearbox:blast

Nope, I had the same issues at first.

Just trust it, it will be fine.

It's like many of the advances - cruise control is another - both great, but I often forget to use them!

Its shit on the GS, strangely better on the 1200r and 1200rs, don't understand why but I've tried it on all 3 models and the GS is the worst.

AGREE!!! Had a loan R1200RS and GSAP was miles better than my 6 month old GSA with now over 7K on the clock. Maybe it has something to do with slightly longer gear selector lever (less force needed/better leverage) than that found on GS/A?? :nenau

GSAP, I find it makes the lever harder to shift on up changes so I drop the revs a touch from 4th upwards and no need for the clutch, yes I know this probably disables GSAP. Down changes love it. Especially coming into bends. No loss of engine braking and it works fine.
I don't tend to rev to high so up changes aren't for me.

Strangely mine is really smooth on up shifts when the bike and gearbox is cold and just setting off. No problems even going from 1-2
After a few minutes not so much and definitely not 1-2. Fine for 3-4-5-6 even with light to medium acceleration.
I find downshifts near perfect with absolute closed throttle and braking hard as you stamp through the gears to stop at the lights etc.

I had an extended load of an R9T Urban GS and I enjoyed being my own gear shift assist (not quite) pro again.

Blimey!

I tried it once on my last GS. But as a rule the roads I use rather preclude the use of cruise control. Thank God!

I go on half-day to full day ride-outs every week, always through villages and towns.

I use Cruise Control through 30, 40, 50, 60 and Motorways to monitor my speeds.

But there are plenty of times its turned off, as you can see in my videos.

I like it on my GS Rallye and I believe it has improved with miles but you have to use it. No point putting 4K on the bike without using it and then wondering why it is stiff.
It isn't perfect, you do need to apply more pressure than a clutch change and no real point using it when pootling as it won't work as designed because it was not designed for that type of riding. That said you don't need to be riding the knickers off it either just be assertive that's all. I use it from 1st to 2nd a lot and it works well.

Try different boots too. I find that different boots/shoes make a difference. A soft boot will give on the upshift and will cause a delay as oppose to a hard rigid boot.

My tuppence worth.
