Gearbox out and apart

what's the owner going to do if it needs similar work in south america ? Wouldn't it have been good practice for him/her to have a go at it at least?

he got married on wednesday, he's leaving for S/ america end of the month, so time was of the essence , he's taking a set of gearbox springs with him, as they can break at any time ( even new ones) .

I'll post all the bearing sizes later ( as gotterdammerung suggested), so those that want to rebuild their own box, can get their own bearings before taking the box apart to find out the sizes .

Beware the paralever gearbox output seal is different to a standard box .

is it possible to shim the box without that jig shown in pic 7?

Bearing sizes = for a 5 speed gearbox .

Output shaft - input end 6403 c3 , output end 6304 c3

Layshaft - input end 6304 c3 , output end 6304 c3 ( sealed bearing)

Input shaft - input end NU204E , output end 6304 c3

Cookie, i've always used the plate/jig for shimming, don't know how you'd do it any other way, without holding the shafts in their exact positions -

i used to have an end cover with the bearing locations machined out, so you could insert a feeler gauge, but your adjusting for the machined cover all the time, instead of the cover that would be used - if you get my drift ;)

Excellent post and pics.....

Thank You sir,:)
that was most educational. i'd heard about the detente spring thing problem. always wondered what was involved and what it all looked like inside.
now i know.:)
Much Appreciated Steptoe.
Og.

great post Mr Steptoe, thanks for making the effort to do pics, wish the guy good luck

Excellent thread, the bearing specs info (duly noted) and the piccies were great.

So know we know what that 'achilles heel' one pound spring looks like, I know of new ones breaking too.... good to have a couple in the pannier I guess.

Very illuminating, Thanks Neil!!

As a footnote, there is a lot of local familiarity and expertise with the airheads down here in Argentina. (Chile and Brazil too I am told).

Parts can be tricky but are only a phone call to UK and 5/6 days away if needed but, the local mechanics are very resourceful.

Tell the owner good luck on his travels...

Saludos desde Mendoza

Brilliant

Neil,
Excellent and no less than I would expect from you.
Your information and attention to detail deserves a beer next time I see you:beer:

Just a thought Steptoe.
How about doing a video.
It would be an interesting view and you 'd probably flog a good few copies to the rest of us on this site. It would beat Discovery Channell. Something like how to fix the ten most common big fixes neede on a GS? Forget about the hassle and expense of making it a slick production, a warts and all version would do.

Removed shims. Put some blue tack/plasticine on the bearing surfaces in the cover - assemble - disassemble and measure thickness of blue tack/plasticine.

Takes some fiddling ... but when you’re in bulla mecanica working is someone else’s shop you can do it.

sounds like a plan.

i've done ducati's in the past by assembling & then measuring shaft float with a vernier or dial guage.

Steptoes way is good - if you've got the shim plate.

If you're stuck somewhere - ask for this stuff.

http://www.dana.com/perfectcircle/Plastigage.htm

if anyone wants it - try TUNES ENG supplies , slough ind. est.

if they ain't got that - plumbers solder would do.

lead fishing weight - chewing gum - wet paper - buisness cards - banana leaves ..............

Dear Mr Steptoe,

Great info, where can I get the puller for the output flange ?

Many Thanks
