Gearbox out and apart

just remembered this old trick.

if your spring goes in the middle of nowhere - you can tie a bungee on the lever at the mid point - and stretch the ends up and down.

This'll act as an external spring :thumb

Really?

The lever seems to be well stuck. It will go up about half a click, if that makes any sense, before it returns to where it was.

Not sure how that would work, though I'll take your word for it that it has worked for someone before.

Not applicable on a bmw gearbox.

You can change gear on the bm box with the selector spring broken, but you have to turn the bike upside down. :D

Bad luck Benjamin

I have the large socket you need to get the swing arm of, in order to remove the gbox if you need it
Cheers
Mike

There's a few on here that could ride one like that :blast:blast:blast

i'm sure we did it on my mates 100/7 back in '84

it was a yellow bungee with black ends.

Whats the chances

Hi just joined and what good timing!! My R100 box is on the bench, I've got a rumbling on the output end bottom left corner? hope its just 1/2/3 bearings.. Can I beg steel or borrow a puller from someone? or anyone know a man who can!! Also that poxy little spring, is it an easy job just to replace it or am I asking for trouble? I am using this as a confidence builder?? bet it won't last.. Shimming?? now that looks trick.

All quite straightforward but you do need the tool to undo the output flange, (not butcher it and break the casing like a PO did to mine), a good heat source to expand the casing and allow easy removal and replacement of the shafts and bearings, a good little press to remove and refit the bearings and a shimming plate and micrometer to get the preload shimming right. The expensive input shaft bearing very rarely gives any trouble and can usually be left alone but the others are so cheap they should be replaced along with the nylon roller in the selectors for which there is an ideal roller skate replacement bearing.
Of course all the oil seals and the gasket (which is an essential part of the shimming measurement) should be replaced.

cheers,

I noticed Steptoe you did not remove the engine mount bolts and push the engine forward a bit to get the gearbox out ,is this just the gs this applies to or can most airhead gearboxes come out with the engine still bolted in place .

And I nearly forgot............the most important selector springs must be replaced!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi I'm new,so no mickey take please,Well not 2 much?

What good timing, my para box is on the bench, Thanks for the info on bearings and that **&%$£ spring (we found half a one in one of our oil changes in Africa but both had all gears still? (no idea how or why). Any great ideas or tips to get the driveshaft flange off would be appreciated!! or has anyone in the West Country got a puller I can beg or borrow?....
:beerjug: ...Cheers Will

sounds tricky

Thanks Arkwright, I only just worked out I'd posted already, I'm thinking it may be a bit of a step too far for my skills now though!! What can poss go wrong? Err loads i'm sure..

Can anyone recommend a good mechanic or shop to send the box into to replace the spring, and possibly overhaul the rest of the box if required?

Any help much appreciated.

Assuming you're near Godalming, you're kind of in Steptoe country. If you can't sort it locally pm me.

cheers,
