Gearbox problem

Today while going to leicester i developed a problem where i couldn't shift gears. It felt like the lever was skipping on the splines, so i pulled over to check still in 6th gear, upon inspection i found the lever was tight and it was an internal problem so i tried to get neutral by hand but all that resulted in was the lever now has no resistance and just hangs down. The bike has been dropped a few times on the left side.

Am i correct in thinking best case scenario is a simple bent selector shaft? Which after looking at the manual seems a possible explanation and hopefully means i can be up and running by monday

Thats the best case scenario, clutch case off and check the gear shaft and pawl which rotates the selector drum. The shaft,and selector pawl should pull away with the clutch in place, anything more than that its a clutch drum off job. If its the selector forks bent etc it a major engine strip down.
It seems unlikley a bent shaft will jam the box solid without previous warnings or a sudden new bash. There are springs etc on the pawls which could suddely fail preventing selection (The R100/80 gearboxes are famous for it). I think a few early posts had a jamed selector due to a clutch fault?
Im any case good luck with your investigations, keep us informed (Please add the age of bike-mileage etc)

Broken selector shaft

New one on order from wollaston costing £45

Bike is an 09 plate with 22k miles on the clock

You have a massive amount of good kharma banked somewhere to have avoided anything catastrophic with that!

wow, I would never of imagined a failure like that.

I can only guess that's what happens when you force the lever beyond its normal range of travel - looks like a useful 'weak' point that will prevent any greater internal damage being sustained.

I presume that you mean 'snapping'?

I'm fairly sure that there haven't been any on this forum. Is this happening elsewhere? Is it all in one country? Is there a common theme anywhere?

No i do mean 'napping' (I.e. bike laying on its side)
