My gearbox has suddenly starting to feel a bit strange. 'Fraid I'm a technical numbskull but best I can describe it is that the gear lever feels less certain than it did before almost like an internal spring that keeps it taut has gone. Still changes gear OK but doesn't feel right. Can anyone shed any light on this?

A related issue is that my warranty has just run out and BMW have kindly asked me if I want an extended warranty for £659!! Sounds like either (a) a complete rip-off or (b) BMW have zero confidence in their bikes surviving after year 2 without major probs. I was gonna chuck it in the bin but if the gearbox is about to throw a wobbly on me it might be worth it.

Grateful your thoughts.

Jon.

Perhaps its suffering from the sticky linkage problems the 1150's suffer from :nenau

Maybe my own experience was a one off with a "friday bike" but:

My 04 Gs: Gearbox no. 1 imploded with 140 ish miles on the clock
Gearbox no. 2 at 8,000 ish
Gearbox no.3 at 8,500 or so.

However I never experienced your symptoms, (just major failures!) but as a generality suggest oyu check out the price of a new clutch & gearbox as opposed to warranty cost and take a view from there

How's gearbox numer four doing? :D

Mine's just had a new gearbox and clutch at 16,000 miles, the old box was getting "notchy" and was causing missed gearchanges when I really needed smooth ones. My warranty expires next month but after a new gearbox and a new rear subframe I've decided on the extended warranty because I intend to keep the bike for a while yet. (I still love it to death!)
Anyway at the rate things are going wrong I'm getting a new bike bit-by-bit. :D

Just been out with a mate of mine for a beer who has a BMW M3 and his extended warranty for one year is exactly the same i.e. £650! How can that be for a motor that cost >3 times as much? These BMW scrotes must be disciminating aginst bikers and abusing my human rights I say :teacher

I had exactly this problem. Could change up easily but not down. BMW Assisit came out and all they did was squirt WD40 on the gear change linkage bushes....worked a treat.

windychuffer - thanks that did the trick (phew!) bloddy marvellous this wd40 stuff

Cheers
Jon.
