Gearlever play/movement.

I've just been trying to track down a mystery rattle on my 1200ST, usually heard at low speeds over rough surfaces. Its not brake bobbins - done them, that rattle disappeared. Its not the fender-extender thing either. I thought it might be the screen mounts (well known for rattles on the ST), but nope, not that either.

Anyway, whilst rooting about I noticed that there's about 1/4" of in-out movement on the gearlever, plus a tiny bit of 'up-down' on the shaft, if that makes sense. Looking at the diagram, is it anything to do with the items numbered 8, or is it normal? Oh, it rattles!

Replacement plastic bushes are only a couple of £.

The only solution to rattling noise is check everything. Bit by bit.

I'll order a pair anyway I think.....last of the big spenders.

Er...no I won't! A re-inspection has revealed that, by loosening the pinch bolt on the lever, it can be pushed further onto the splined shaft, which removes most of the in-out movement! It doesn't rattle now. Too bloody hot for a run out at the moment, but I'm hoping my mystery noise has gone!

You could source or make some plastic washers to take up the float.
