I am currently planning a trip next month to Landal Marina in Lipno Czech Republic to attend the European Indian Motorcycle Rally. I have booked accommodation at the rally venue but nothing for the transit to that location.

I have booked the ferry Newcastle to Amsterdam and have two and a half days to get to Lipno. I would like to avoid motorways and take a lazier route through small town and villages. Google maps shoes the fast route (motorways) 10 hours via Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremburg. The non motorway route follows a similar track but further north and estimates 16 hours.

My only prior experience of Germany is blatting down autobahns to get to places as quick as possible and staying in cities. So I would like to take my time and see a bit more of the country, I have 2.5 days to cover 662 miles (slow route avoiding autobahns). Any suggestions of small towns or villages to overnight at on this route. Should I be looking at Guesthouses, Pensions etc. Is it advisable to book or possible to wing it and look for somewhere on the day (mid June).

Secondly from what I can see there are no tolls in the Netherlands and Germany with the exception of some bridges and tunnels. For the Czech Republic it appears they do have tolls for which a Vignette is required but it looks to me that motorcycles are exempt, anyone ridden the Czech Republic that can confirm that?

it's nice near lindlar or siegen then further down towards furth

the problem using the backroads you need to plot a route first, then see what is nearby

Motorcycles are exempt from tolls in Cz (y)

This, very roughly, is your non-motorway, relatively twisty route.

It is close on 900 km (560 miles) which gives an average daily mileage for your anticipated two-and-half days of travel of 225 miles or there about.

Where to stay? That’s a tricky one, not least as nobody here (least of all you) know where you’ll be come the time to put on your pyjamas. Me? I’d plot the route out roughly and break it into chunks of day one, day two and the half days, sliding my finger along the route. Roughly where my finger stopped, I’d look at the map (or more likely Google displayed on my PC) and ask it to suggest hotels. I’d book the ones that suited me best, safe in the knowledge that the proprietor would not throw stones at me for daring to arrive on an awesome Adventure (with a capital A) steed.

Heidelberg is nice, we've stayed in the Hotel Goldener Falke a couple of times, food was excellent and underground parking nearby.

Google's non motorway route passes through the Harz region and close to Goslar, a lovely place to spend an evening. Hotel Achterman was good, a short walk to the main square with animated clock tower.

Head for Hersbruck in Bavaria for your last stop before the rally. It's close to the Czech border. The Cafe Bauer. The town is twinned with Lossie so you'll be with people who know Moray well. The owner used to sponsor a catering course at Moray college. Excellent local food and drink and not expensive.

On fact, here's an itinerary for you. Apart from the Czech but ...

I’d suggest somewhere in the region of Northern Eifel of Germany for the first night stop if you are crossing from Hull into Netherlands (Eurosport). My assumption about your crossing is simply on nothing more than that you are located in the Scotlanshire part of this island.

The second night you can stay somewhere around Erfurt area. Then cross into Czechia the following day around lunch time.

Like Wapping has said, apart from you, nobody does know where you are coming from and into which port or indeed European country you are planing on landing into.

If you are traveling (unlikely) via the tunnel (Calais), then Trier is a nice place to stop at. The following day, circa 200-250 miles along the road is your next stop,

Throw a decent map on to the kitchen table, have a good look, perhaps poke a pin or two and tie a piece of string between your landing port and the destination, they use booking.com or similar to fathom accommodation that suits your liking, budget, etc.
recommendations are great, but what might be a fantastic hotel for one man, ming be completely the opposite to another, or indeed be completely out of your budget.

Thanks for all the replies and advice so far; I've been at this all day trying to plot a route on a huge paper map and looking at places to stay. So far i've loosely plotted a route around google maps "avoid highway" route and it does seem pretty twisty so i'm a bit sceptical of the timings they state.

But I've booked my first night in Warstein https://gaestehaus-warsteiner-welt.de/ looks nice and reasonably priced. Will look around the Weiden area for the next night, this route will take me through 3 national parks. Not even thought about a return route yet.

Thanks; I did mention it in my first post; i'm going Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Now, that does sound interesting, "twinned with Lossie" you learn something everyday. I'll have look at that one thanks.

Been to Czech Republik a few times and always just blat down motorway to Chemnitz from Amsterdam I think its 425miles IIRC, 2nd day then into Czech and stayed in Prague 1st night and Cesky Krumlov 2nd night, from there its a short hop into Austria and then on to Italy, roads in Czech were great.

Just booked second night in Hersbruck as per Pete’s recommendation. Just need to do the same for the return, but that’s enough for today.

Thanks Pete; currently in the cafe Bauer, beautiful setting, nice room. Warstein was crap by the way so I’ll avoid that in the future. Had a chat with the owner on arrival, bike secured in his back yard too. Great place thanks again for the pointer.

Warstein was a bust then?
Heading that way in 10 days time and was considering it

A few of us went that way this year I did a thread that may help you out, non motorway.
