its crazy, BMW said the calliper was probably removed change the rear tyre! :blast I guess they don't know their own bikes very well.

Useless trying to talk to any big company they have cash and lawyers, only thing that really hurts them are in the pocket class action lawsuits, and sales just look at Harley now.

Not sure if it has been mentioned but I was told last year by a dealer that the rear caliper bolts on the WC models are a single use only item and need to be swapped when the caliper is removed for a pad swap. They are pre coated with a threadlock compound

Has been said in the thread Neil :thumby: but OP clearly stated he did not remove the caliper, as you and most know here caliper removal not needed to replace pads.
 
Just watched the video and skipped 3 pages to here .... very lucky man and I hope he is ok .. despite what caused the collapse he did well to rub off a lot of speed to spit him off at the end .. relatively slowly.

That is for sure, glad I got my Helite Turtle jacket, came off not to fast in gravel, certainly saved my bones.

I think it was determined that the brake caliper had come off and went through the wheel. Today on our return trip from Land’s End my friend suffered the same fate on his 65 plate Gs the whole caliper assembly including mounting bracket broke off at 70mph on the M5 he had not touched it, it was last serviced at BMW. Looks like casting failure. Be warned!!! he is sending me pictures tonight. He is lucky to be alive!"

As appears in the picture of the original incident it seems the caliper carrier casting may be failing rather than bolts coming loose ?

I've heard of the threads in the caliper failing due to being over-torqued, front or rear, but not a casting problem TBH. Here we have the OP/rider confirming that the pads were changed but the caliper bolts left untouched since the bike left Berlin.

I remain suspicious of spoke failure, as the regime for checking & re-torquing is so easily ignored/forgotten on any bike, not just the GS. The subsequent wheel collapse then wreaks havoc & leads to dealers looking at every avenue to deny responsibilty the moment DIY is admitted.
 
Do brake calipers only fall off bikes with spoked wheels or do they also fall of cast wheel bikes?
 
That is indeed a good question ; if the only common factor is the wheel .........

Just a couple of days ago, another GSER suffered a similar incident on the M5, though his wheel stayed intact long enough to come to a halt thankfully. So thats at least three of us who's rear calliper has come loose!

Check your calliper bolts folks !!

I don't think they should either to be honest. Far too much of a coincidence he worked on the calipers right before this happened

yes, but does this mean the caliper was not fixed on correctly? did the bike owner do the maintenance? did he re-use the bolts? or did the caliper break off? etc etc
