I spent half of last Sunday playing with a 3D jigsaw puzzle... Having recently acquired a number of nearly-new Givi Monokey boxes, I've purchased a Givi PL189 "tubular sidecase holder"
Has anyone successfully fitted one of these things???

The R/h side fitted OK, loose as instructed....
Then round to the left...
First, the longer bolt that replaces the upper footpeg support fouls the OE silencer a couple of mm before correctly tightened, though that could probably be cut shorter.
On offering up the left side rack... BIG problems...!
Even if I shorten the footrest bolt, there is NO WAY the lower arm of the rails will fit between foot rest and 'zaust as instructed.
With it in very approx position ('cause of aforementioned obstruction) there, and the connecting spacer bar in place between left and right sides (supplied) behind the number plate, the upper mount to the frame (on threads vacated by OE pannier rails) stands over a centimetre proud of the correct position!
The rails appear to be designed for a rear subframe significantly wider, and a totally different 'zaust-footrest arrangement - like the 1150 perhaps? though the packing and instructions (HA! HA!) both say it's for both R1100/1150GS, 1994-2002.
Oh... and the indicator mounting brackets supplied cannot (so the 'instructions' say) be used in conjunction with the E189 top box adapter plate I’ve previously fitted.

On ordering the system at a local dealer's I spoke directly with Givi UK who assured me the two could be used together. The supplied mounts HAVE to be used as the left hand flasher would foul left hand box IF I ever got the lot to fit!

We're off to Spain in less than a fortnight and the need to ration kit would be greatly reduced if I didn't have to re-fit the OE BMW podules....

Any ideas?

Hi Ian , I had the same problem, it took me about 4 hours to eventually fit the full rack, but I promise you it will fit. I put an extra spacer the exhaust side to stop the pipe touching the frame. I will try and take some photos tomorrow to show you in case your fitting it wrong!!!

Note extra spacer between exhaust bracket.

As for the indicators, I fitted them with the brackets supplied with with the PL189 and the E189 alredy fitted, but didn't like how it looked, so kept the left one standard and shortened the right one to fit.

Thanks for the pics Moose,
It;s good to know that someone's managed it, I certainly like the idea of shortening the l/h indicator (how's that done?).
Unfortunately you may have been a bit rash with your "promise" that it would fit MY GS....

I notice from your pics that you're running with an aftermarket can- Remus/Sebring/Laser? I dunno?-
Could I see the OE silencer on the floor in the background?
I still have the OE silencer on mine and believe you me, there is NO WAY the Givi's lower arm is gonna fit between can and footrest, let alone the Givi supplied spacer. I don't like the idea of stressing the exhaust system by forcing it towards the wheel with additional spacers. How risky is this??
literally, you can't get a biro between the two of 'em them at present, lying in the plane parallel to the wheel-line as rack requires.
Can and footrest are straight and undamaged.
If I'm going about this wrong PLEASE put me right, otherwise I'll just have to invest in a slimmer end can after the holiday.

Thanks,

Ian

ps. what is the overall width of your rails at the rear? how long is the (exposed section of) the spacer between left and right sides?

Givi Pannier rails.... Eureka!

Well, it's on!

After a lunchtime's brainstorming at work, I finally got it to fit without moving the exhaust.
I've gone between the hanger and footpeg plate employing several spacers, longer bolts and a ratchet cargo strap to pull it into line! It's slightly stressed but doesn't interfere with any of the frame or peripheries on the right.

The only prob now is the l/h indicator...

The box will fit, bendind the flasher backwards but I don't like that.
I've shortened it slightly by leaving out the small plastic spacer, but it's not enough. How can I shorten it further??

Shorter Indicator Stalks

Hi Ian, basically its a ******* to do, alternatively come and swop them for mine !!
The rubber section in the indicator looks as though the metal tube goes all the way through so it just needs you to decide how much rubber to cut off, then shorten the metal tube to the required length, easy eh.
NO, the metal tube does not go all the way through. If you attempt to trim back the rubber section you will finish up with the indicator stalk in two pieces, ermm like someone else I know  :o
It then takes a long time and finding some skilled people to repair the damage and finish up with what you set out to achieve
in the first place. It really is not worth the effort.
Either swop me or buy another pair of indicator stalks and have ago yourself.
You have been warned!!!!!

Best of luck Gazza

Yeah I cut through the stalk thinking it goes all the way :( But managed to get it sorted using half the stalk and a couple of cable ties, not perfect but will do for now!!

All of a sudden me Al Jesses are starting to look like a bargain :)

Ian - have a good holiday :)

Well....

It's all on and tested (300 mile blast to Wales and back with no glitches) and for the princely sum of £88- and a lot of head scratching and help from the b/board and friends....

The Moral for me is:

Givi kit good, Givi instructions CRAP!!

Throw them away and start from scratch!

All packed and ready for the off to Plymouth.
B&B tonight, Ferry in the AM.

Hasta Luego Amigoes

Ian
