Couple of Fridays ago, a group of us went to Scotland.
389.5 miles in to a 390 mile trip, my GF was knocked off her F800ST. A bit of bruised leg and ego and a scraped bike. The gear lever toe piece was broken off, making it unrideable.
Rang a BMW dealer up first thing on Saturday morning. None in stock. I explained that we were many miles from home and her bike was stranded. I asked if they had a used or even a new ST in stock and would they take the lever off one and sell it to us. “We wouldn’t do that”.
Good service?
So, went to a local car dealer and the workshop drilled the lever and put a bolt through as a new toe piece. No charge.
Good service?
Rang another BMW dealer who actually had a lever in stock and agreed to hang on to it for me, promising not to sell it. Arriving at the dealers a few hours later the lever was on a salesman’s desk waiting for us. Friendly service and the offer of test rides whilst we were there.
Good service?
Carried on to Dundee to meet up with the rest of the group. GF did well to carry on riding after the shock of getting knocked off for the first time ever, but was getting paranoid about the amount of tread left on her back tyre. She decided that she wanted a new back tyre, so at 5.10pm we started ringing local bike shops. Found a local dealer, who should have closed at 5pm, who was willing to wait for us to get to him and then fit a new tyre straight away. He took the wheel off and charged a fair price. Good service?
Meanwhile, my bike a had been making a whining noise that had been getting louder over the weekend. Without ear plugs in, it was apparent that the infamous final drive problem appeared to have struck (2nd GS, 2nd failure. Should I have to take out an extended warranty just ‘cus I’m scared that the FD will pack in?).
Rang BMW and they arranged a local garage to come and pick me and the bike up and take us home. I even beat the others back who’s set off before me.
Good service?
GS arrives at local BMW dealer, who tell me that they are fully booked up, but will be able to look at it on 8 July. No, not a misspelling of June. 5 weeks later they can look at it.
Good service?
Ring BM Customer Service, who ring around various dealers, speak to the recovery people and arrange for GS to be taken to another dealer, who starts to work on it the same day. They were aghast that I was expected to wait 5 weeks and yes they were booked up to but would always be able to squeeze something like this in.
Good service?
A bit of a mixed bag, but I found it very disappointing that when in deep doo doo, some BM dealers aren’t willing/able to help. I wont name the dealers on here but my friends know who they are and I will happily tell anyone I speak to of what you might expect.
