Got Shaft Rot.... again WTF

I wash mine the same way as u and the original paint is fine on my shaft and never had any water in there. So it can’t be as simple as a design issue or they would all do it. My Ducati swingarm used to fill up and swamp the rear hub. Ducati did modify the swingarm eventually with a drain hole.

I have had the rear plastic spray guard fill up with water but swinger is mint inside.

So what the heck is mine doing this then, I wonder???

Are you sure they changed both parts..............or just touched up the paint on the final drive..........:rob conspiracy time.

A VERY sternly written email c/w pictures with the dealership copied in would be my first action:rob

I would have my doubts now, throw the book of warlord at them............;)

Nah, I've had enough of them now.

The bike is in good shape overall. I'll get my Ohlins bling fitted, my Hyperpro steering damper, my new painted shaft drive fitted, all deep cleaned and just carry on riding.

Since the cam alignment work the engine revs and sounds smoother.

So fuck BMW

I've cleaned up the rust, luckily its mainly surface rust, so came up pretty clean.

They have definately changed the final drive and shaft... there were identifying marks on my old ones that are not on the new ones.

But they fitted it all with no grease protection. It's all gone rusty alarmingly quick.

But hopefully I've caught it in time and I'll remedy and maintain it from here.

Just got to figure out why my swing arm is holding so much water?

I wonder if the water is getting in at the engine end of the shaft. When my shaft and housing was replaced they didn’t quite seal the rubber boot at the engine end properly (round the back out of sight) and there was a small hole for water to get in. I manoeuvered it on properly and put a new cable tie on it and it’s been fine since. Just a thought.

I'll have a look tomorrow.

Theres no rust at the top end... it's all at the final drive end. :(

At least BMW are consistent with the rust throughout the bike. :D

Gentlemen, may I remind you.
You buy the bikes from BMW motorrad, not BMW U-boot.

I don't know what and why, I can only say that I ALWAYS use a power washer and a Foam-Gun on my bikes, and I have to this day never had water issues or rust issues on any of my bikes.

Looking at the pictures, I do agree it looks nasty, but I fail to be able to explain how this may happen in such a short periode of time. Even using power washer on a regular basis, I have yet to see any trace of water. Filling up the shaft with water may explain the rust, but there must be some kind of not mounting the boot properly.

yes, I'd say the top one... can you see any signs of it running down inside the arm at all?

I've just had a good look around the top boot, and its mounted correctly with no holes, or gaps.
