Got Shaft Rot.... again WTF

I am thinking as hard as I can not to get one, but at 6ft 2 might be to big, must try one at some stage.

Off topic I know, but my mate goes all over on the Cub.. 600 KM weekends, off roading.. they go anywhere... did send me some video the other day of Gs's in the mud trying to get up a hill... and a man & wife just ride past the lot of them on a Cub.. did make me smile :) Try one of them.. they are a bit bigger ;)

Will do in September, as would like one for bobbing around in winter.

Neil it is actually not a hard job, as basically if their is corrosion as they say, it will only be at the bottom, Warlords was corroded he cleaned it up, the whole shaft, but you may only need to do the bottom of the shaft, see video below, it is not a hard job, just take your time, plenty of videos to see how it is done.

The spline material is very thick. Would take several years to corrode. Obviously faster if the gater is collecting water and the steel is bathing in it. Maybe be better to put a small drain hole in the bottom and spray some GT85 or WD40 in once in a while. At least the steel will dry out in the winter when tucked up in the garage. When they reach 10 years old there could be lots of issues...

chinese shit steel
built to die
bought by 50 year olds (who paid off their mortgage) on a lease scheme and it goes in a skip at 4 years old

This 50 year old has no intention of chucking it in a skip.... going to ride it for as long as the Chinese Chocolate steel allows me....

Thanks for that constructive advice. For your in formation I was 49 when I bought it and I paid cash after saving up for a few years so mind how you fuck off.

I thought I would hold off any updates on my 2017 GS Rallye Sport until it was all sorted. It only took 5 weeks.........

To cut a very, very long story short I collected my bike this morning with a new drive shaft and new final drive. Same issue as Warlord had originally but my dealer kept trying to charge me for it.
At over £3K in repairs that was never going to happen. My bike was 26 months old 11,500 miles, I bought it new from them and I extended the warranty however my dealer took it upon themselves to not bother putting in a claim as they were convinced it was not covered as corrosion is not covered by the extended warranty. I eventually forced them to submit for a 'goodwill gesture' from BMW Motorrad UK. This was accepted and finally I am back on the road.

This was not a joyous experience and has left a bitter taste. Hopefully their technical skills were better than their customer service skills and all will be good.

I booked my 2016 GSA into Bahnstormers Maidenhead a few weeks back for it's first MOT. 6500 miles and I'm a fair weather rider so it's had an easy life.

MOT passed fine but I was made aware that when the rear wheel was spun freely something was not quite right. You could feel a vibration on the final drive.

I have the extended warranty so it was booked in the following week and it had a rusty drive shaft. Water had got in yet I rarely ride it in the rain and I'm careful when washing. Anyway, was all replaced free of charge under the extended BMW warranty and because the mileage was low they didn't even charge the £50 excess.

Great service from Bahnstormers and BMW for a painless replacement. Yes I know it shouldn't have failed at 6500 miles but I've had these bikes since 2005 so I know how valuable a warranty is when you need it. The drive shaft was about £650 I think plus fitting so probably not much change out of £1000

All set for the Alps trip in Sept :beerjug:

Nice one and many moan about extended warranty, IMHO it helps when you try to get some goodwill, get ready for those that did not take it...........fire......:D

Ooh get you with your local knowledge :thumb

That is a 3 minute ride for me...... I shall probably ride around the island when the sun sets and the traffic lightens.

I'm probably being paranoid but I had a good old feel of my final drive after a few mile ride today and it was pretty hot. Not too hot to touch but hot. As I have never done this before (groped my final drive)..... Is this okay or have my dealership screwed it up???

So they charge extortionate prices for their spares which must have a fantastic markup, items that fail before they should and offer extended warranties because people are afraid of the cost of said parts prices.

All in all a nice business model for BMW and no doubt others.
