GPS black spot /camera detectors

Got a letter through the door the friday after Snowdonia..... you know the score, takes it up to 6 now and i am paranoid.

The only consolation with this one is that after seeing the sign (over a brow and going from 60 to 30 witha van parked 100 yds behind it) if i were in the car having rolled of the gas i'd have been going 15mph faster.

Enough bitterness about the Welsh then, i'm up for a gps thing to bleep / flash at me when near blackspots and or cameras, the dvla paper is very precious to me and after 6 points in 7 months i fell prevention is a good idea.

Yeah its shite isn't it. The cameras give you no lee way....

I got stopped 25 months ago doing 105 in a 70 zone in my SAAB Aero by a panda with a hand held (would have been more but I had slowed down while waiting for a merc to pass a truck).....

got a right bollocking from the copper but he only did me for an SP60 as I had a clean license... but speed cameras don't take any account....

Since then an SP40 (camera variable on M25) and SP30 (37mph in a road works area early one fine Sunday morning with no traffic around)....

... even with a Radar detector (bought 3 immediately after last set of point - one for car, one for GSA, one still to be fitted to Boxercup) I still have that dread on returning from Dublin when I check the mail. Always look for that unknown sender and open first in case it is a NIP...

... mind you got stopped going onto the ferry at Holyhead on Monday by this copper - wanted to talk about the GSA (has a blade and is looking to change) - who checked the datatag on my bike (could find them - lot of bloody good they are!!!).

He got done by his own lot for 110 - 6 week ban and if he gets done again he loses his job!!!

The only prob with the GPS position ones is that they don't pick up the hand helds mind you the radar detector does not pick up the average speed one

Mind you as soon as the GSA is 7 month old I think I will get Irish plates and then sod them...

When they start switch points then I will have to think about some other country to register the bike in..

I assume you were slowing down. If so I'd contest it. I think the plod have to get a steady reading (impossible if you're slowing down). Also tell the magistrates that, in your opinion there is insufficient time/distance to safely bring your speed down from 60mph to 30mph (take pictures of the view you get when cresting the brow of the hill).
I've seen lots of places where you're hacking round a blind(ish) bend at 60(ish) when, out of the bushes springs a 30mph limit sign. Gives you about 30 metres to drop 30mph around a bend. VERY SAFE...NOT!! That's what I call an accident black spot.

I don't think this one will fly, Howard. If you are unable to slow to 30mph in the distance you can see, how would you stop if there was a traffic stoppage/pedestrian etc. The inescapable conclusion is that you're going too fast for the conditions and view - which directly supports the speeding report in the first place.

Wonderful but the only places I could find in English other than "Mizuka just bought a ....." were in Japanese so don't think it has reached the UK or been linked into the UK Gatso etc database....

They are a uk mail order company selling loads of different detectors, many combo laser/gps units.

Thanks for the kind words, to be honest yeah i was in the wrong, and live too far away to get photo evidence, by the way slamming the brakes on woulda brought me down to speed, and down to earth via the tit in the metro behind me so wasn't really an option.

No license no job for me too... gonna go for a road angel me thinks, assc of police officers guidelines mean nothing nowadays and with so many cameras around i'm just sure that 5mph over would get another fine

so i'll get a road angel and at least have an annoying bleep to warn me that there may be one around in case of lapse of concentration.

when i get it i will tell you all how it goes.

For the record i don't usually speed, no law against acceleration though i believe.

Suggest you look at the Origin B2. Currently only a GPS based system but scheduled out later this year with a radar detector for an extra £100.

That way you will get all (fized, tuvelo and mobile units). The current GPS units will not pick up mobile units just as the radar detectors will nut pick up tuvelo.

Be warned if you are caught with a Radar Detector in France it is a big fine whilst in Ireland they just stamp on it. I don't believe the GPS units are an issue in France etc but don't know about the database...

I will probably go to the Origin B2 when the Radar detector module comes out and move the Bel Motorcycle unit to the car or the boxercup...

Yeah, all forms of Radar is forbidden here. They'll take away your unit and give you the mother of all fines.

The strange thing is that there are a couple of GSM phones (specific brand & models) that start playing sounds when they approach a radar. Apparently they are even more sensitive than real radar detectors. And there's nothing the cops can do about it (apart from using laser).

(BTW, here in France a group of crackers have gotten in to the Air Defense system which maps radars in France. Since you can tune in to specific frequencies, these boys & girls have tuned in to the police radars. Now they transmit via SMS to GPS coordinates of fixed AND MOBILE radar units. The SMS message is read by certain GPS that are instaled in cars - those that receive traffic reports - and then warn you about a radar a few miles away. Again, nothing the cops can do about...- score 1 Speeders : 0 Cops).

Unibar - if there was a car right up your chuff, and it would have put you in danger to slow down quickly as he could rear-end you, then I'd say you have a pretty good defence. Say that the car was consistently too close behind you for the last 2-3 miles and had been harassing you, and you felt that if you had slowed quickly for the limit he would have hit you.

Take the opportunity to point out that had it been a traffic policeman who had been following you, they would have noticed this and probably done the person behind for careless driving.
