Grossglockner more expensive for 2012

Did the Grossglockner last year. End of May, so plenty of snow still around. Loved the ride (starting from Zell) so much that when I got to the other end I simply turned around and did it all again.

I loved it - seeing the Hairy Bikers programme a week or two ago brought it all back. I will certainly be going there again - hope to be able to stay a bit longer next time, as we only had one full day there to take it all in.

Needless to say I've got loads of photos and videos to cheer me up when i'm feeling a bit down:

Hopefully todays snow-down to 1000m - won't prevent the opening this Friday. The weather forecast is good for Friday so I hope to be there in company with a GS rider from this site who is helping with our DIY marathon right now!

John,

I've got my lot just around France this year but will be in to see you and the Gross Glockner in 2013 :thumb

Pete and I came over the Grosslockner and had a nosey around on our way home from the Mongolian ride.

After weeks of riding in sunshine it was a bit of a wake up call as it absolutely pissed down, but the gorgeous pigtailed girl in the cafe wearing lederhosen gave us hot apple strudel and all was well with the world:)

Probably worthwhile on a nice day:rolleyes:

Not just us.

is this free pass thingy, just at your gaff or is it at all the hotels in the region. I ask as we are staying at the http://www.iselsbergerhof.at/ in late August?

The pass-called the national park Hohe Tauern card is only given by those places who have signed up with the national park tourism organisation -I had a quick look at the link but could not see any mention of the card so I guess the answer is no. There are fewer places offering the card this year as costs have risen considerably

The card is paid for by a daily charge that we have to pay for each adult guest staying two nights or more. For us, given that almost all our guests are bikers, it makes commercial sense. For you guys it is a bargain, no tolls to pay on roads you will want to ride plus a huge range of things like boat trips on the lakes, mountain railways and cable cars, museums etc all free with the card.

The NP card is not available to buy it can only be given by such as ourselves. You can buy a Kärnten card here but this does not give free use of the Grossglockner and several other things that are included in the NP card.

Cheers, will bang an email to them. Your place looked good and was a possibilty but some of my group wanted to spend more time in the Dolimites and the other half in Austria, so I had to compromise, fecking fickle bikers eh!

Hi John.. In Zell am see and looking at your place for Saturday and Sunday.... Did she open last Friday as planned?

Give you a call tomorrow to see if you can take me Saturday and Sunday.

John

Not seen it previously but thanks... Looks open but chilly!!! Best wear an extra layer that Mornin!!!

We use the webcams all the time-sometimes to convince guests that it's not a good idea on that day! I call them up every morning, along with weather forecasts so that I can advise guests about the best riutes for that day.

As for the GG this is Austria, we got an Email timed at 11.05am to say it was not opening until the next day.
If you are staying two nights we can give you a voucher for the Glockner but we have to Email it-can you pick it up? If not, pay the toll, don't tell them you booked, then we can refund the toll as long as you keep the receipt. No problems with rooms here you would be very welcome-you can also call my mobile if that helps - 043 (0) 69917054281

Brilliant John thanks.... I always knew this early in May was gonna be touch and go with the weather!! I'll call on the mobile tomorrow and am fairly sure the guys at the campsite here will be able to print out voucher for me.... Talk tomorrow.... Cheers, John :thumb

My German is a bit rusty, but does´t this site say that it can be bought for €46 for 6 days at 16 tourist offices and 36 participating hotels? http://www.nationalpark.at/de/sommer/hohe-tauern-card.html

Looks like a good deal: http://www.nationalpark.at/fileadmin/images/Christian/HTC_Sehenswuerdigkeiten_2012.pdf

Not the same card thought

There are lots of these card schemes in Austria and they can be a little confusing. The link you quote is for the Hohe Tauern Salzburgerland card. The scheme we belong to is the National park Hohe Tauern Kärnten card scheme. Not the same and covers a different region.

The Grossglockner, being half in Salzburgerland and half in Kärnten is covered by both cards. If you are staying in Salzburgerland you can buy that card as it says on the website-you have to make your own mind up about the value-you can get a 30 day GG pass for 39 Euros.

If you are staying in our region there are two cards schemes, the Kärnten card and the National park card. The Kärnten card can be purchased http://www.kaerntencard.at/en/ but the national park card can only be given by hotels etc http://np-kaerntencard.at/en.aspx

As we are within the national park here we can be part of the national park card scheme. This operates together with the Kärnten card scheme-everything included with the Kärnten card is included and in addition there are a number of extras such as free use of the Grossglockner that are not part of the normal Kärnten card scheme.

For bikers in particular the national park card offers huge benefits that are not available elsewhere-which is why we pay to be able to give it to you guys!

I hope that clears up any confusion

John

Thanks, I am now confused at a much higher level. I´ll probably just end up doing what I usually do; just offer the biggest bill I have and hope it is enough.:nenau

Simple really, book in with us and you will get a pass that not only covers the Grossglockner but also the Nockalmstrasse, Malthochalmstrasse and several other fine roads. We can also send out a voucher to people booked in here who want to arrive via the Grossglockner-before we have issued the National park card which we do on arrival here (subject to 2 nights min stay)
