GS 1250

My bike starts straight away from my garage but normally after my first stop maybe 3 miles it won’t start again like the battery is flat. It has broken down for about tenth time and been collected and taken to Dealer. I have had several batteries fitted and last time the software was upgraded. I use an optimate charger when in my garage. It is 2.5 years old. The problem is reproducing the fault as normally once with the dealer it will start ok although this time I have a video. Anybody else experienced this problem please.

When it won't start (after about 3 miles) - what voltage is showing on the TFT?

I had something very similar to this some years ago (not on a BMW I may add) and by a process of elimination over a few weeks we tracked it down to a dry joint on one of the coil packs. Whilst I'm not suggesting its the coils, it sounds like with your issue - given the battery has been changed a few times - that you either have a dirty connection or a dry joint which is failing as soon as the engine warms.

Personally I'd have all the panels off and check all the ignition connections, taking each plug apart and spraying with contact cleaner, also checking the voltage either side of the connection. Either that or take it to an auto electrician, they can generally track these things down pretty quickly.

Similar experience to a couple of others on here

First ride of tis year, started the bike and rode to the petrol station with a friend where it would not resart.

After a few attempts had to push it away from the pumps and try again. Still no go and the TFT was going black with the voltage discharge. I suspected the battery was goosed and tried it one last time before calling recovery and it fired

Rode 2 miles home and put it on charge (Optimate 4). Fortunately I have more than one bike so I was able to get my S10 out and catch up with my friend.

When I got home I checked the battery with a multi-metre and all seemed fine

No more problems but I reported it to my dealer (Alan Jefferies, West Yorkshire) who replaced the battery. No problem since including a European Tour.

As I had a VERY similar problem I think the problem lies in this area. If you've had 'several batteries' I would look at the charging system (very unlikely to be the cause if it's been checked by your dealer). The only thing left would appear to be the Optimate. Could be faulty, over charging and causing the problem. A good battery should hold it's charge for quite a few weeks. Don't put it on charge and see if the problem remains or goes

Hope this helps

Mike

check all of the connections between the battery and starter motor with a spanner or check for volt drops whilst trying to start in faulty state. I had similar on an 1150 ADV and it turned out to be a slightly loose nut on one of the connections. Not noticeable by hand but when spannered it turned by another 3/4 turn. I can only assume that when warm something was expanding making it worse,

Cheers

I had the same problem last year on my 2019 GS, start ok get it out the garage stop then wouldn't restart. The dealer immediately replaced the battery stating it was a known problem with a bad batch of batteries. No probs since

I had the same issue with my 2019 GS. First off they told me it was my battery but when that was replaced it was my fault for not charging the battery even though it was never over a week before rides and it started from cold but not hot.

There are lots of threads on here and a few possibilities as to what it could be. Most likely is that the bike when stops is in a position where the release valve isnt sufficiently open on the cylinders for the battery to 'push' against a closed system. Each time mine would start when the bike was cold but not hot. I ended up changing dealers and changing bikes to a brand new 21 plate that i got a good deal on. Upgrading the output of the battery might help, and that is the usual sort. The battery from the pre shift camswas i think meant to be a higher output.

Search bar on here though should bring up a fair bit about it.
