Hi guys.

I'm a fairly experienced rider, just sold my Hypermotard. Recently accepted a position to work aboard a yacht as an engineer and this particular boat is ok with me transporting my personal bike.... Very unusual for my industry, but I'll take it.
So, I've narrowed it down to a couple of models and the GS is one of them. The critical thing for me is getting the bike on and off the boat, so weight and size is is paramount because sometimes we have to drop it in the tender and take it ashore.
Initially I was leaning towards the 690KTM, but the added benefit of a better touring machine and off road capabilities - are making me have a serious look at the F800GS.
I am still slightly worried about the ingress/egress and wanted some of your thoughts.
I was thinking about building a special pallet to store the bike with the wheels off and craning it off on the pallet.
Has anything like this been done before? Basically, the smaller I make the bike, the less likely that I don't have to take it off when I don't want to.
I'm concerned with the weight as well, but only a little bit.
Any weight loss mods out there besides the exhaust?

I look forward to your replies.

David

A GS on a yacht tender?

I can't see it.....it's gonna have to be a chuffing big tender!

Getting it on and off isnt a major problem...you can makeup a webbing sling quite easily, but you need to establish the carying capacity and size of the tender first, or its a non starter as an idea :(

recon the sort of tender he is talking about is a 25ft sunseeker or the like :D my answer to what bike get a nice r80g/s monolever slightly more resilliant to salt and not nealy as much hasle if you do accidentally deep 6 it :rob

The F800GS is around 200kg fuelled up and ready to go, so equivalent to about 2 people, not really a worry. Most tenders easily cope with 6 - 8 people. It's just the logistics of getting it in there, and making sure something top heavy doesn't go over the side. After the Duke, if you're looking for a GS, then the 800 is probably the right move. Having said that, not too many Med marinas are ready for a bike on the pontoon. It'd be great riding up to the Harbourmaster though. Do you need to carry flares?

i've been on a yacht with a two car garage and the tender needed two crew!!.

I'd go for a large single that's easy to manhandle and off load... reckon the KTM would be ideal....GS just too heavy IMO...

i used to have a yacht and getting the picnic and kids from the shore to the yacht in the tender was stressful enough.... throw in an outboard and i used to have palpitations...

Its got to be a 1200 adv, Then you can attach a length of chain and use it as an anchor when it breaks down:aidan

Gotta be a small monolever . sensibly though I would go for something like a dr400 .. It would help if we knew what size boat we are talking about.
There was one in Falmouth recently that had a 50ft sunseeker on one side of the deck and a fully rigged 60 ft sailing yacht on the other, .. Oh and a helicopter as well..

hi nice job, i know some big boats and if its anything like the Mayan queen iv

seen here in dartmouth where my folks live, you would still struggle to get your bike ashore even if the tender is a 10m sunseeker.

its the ports equipment that is the restricting side of things not the boat.

even in the med it would be s struggle - except where sometimes you can moor stern on, as in Nice, Monte carlo etc

and lots harder if you are island hopping in the sun.

so the smallest bike you can get away with would be my bet.

Whilst it'd be nice to see the boat, has anyone else wondered what the Captain is thinking his bike will be? The captain might only be thinking of something like a C90 :hide

Best go for something simple and light someone put a 1200 ADV on this one and look what happenned soooooo heavvvvyyyyyyy!!!

Our tender is 7M center console. The weight isn't an issue, and only comes into the equation when we are stern to.
As I mentioned, I plan on building a transport pallet to take the wheels off and lower the cg.
Thoughts?

NIIIIICE!!!!!

See, it doesn't take much to make a man happy!!!
