I changed the air filter, now it smells of fuel and I am not getting as good MPG as I used to? What might I have done wrong?

Did you move the tank? Does your bike have quick disconnects, is one now leaking? I can't otherwise see how the air filter can be installed incorrectly unless it is somehow possible to install the intake incorrectly. Have you left a rag or cloth in the air filter housing? Has my other work been carried out apart from changing the air filter?

Put it on the main stand, start the engine and look for leaks. Use a bright torch and look up the side of the tank with the bars turned, it isn't unheard of for the clips to leak where they join the tank.

What Luke Says

If it isn't "raw" Petrol from a leak? (hard to know from your description if its petrol leak or a petrol smell from exhaust in that bike is running rich then its likely that you haven't clipped the return pipe quick release fully home properly (Top one is tank return)

However Usually this is accompanied by a much heavier fuel pump sound

So basically instead of the relief valve allowing excess fuel to return to the tank its at full pump pressure and being forced through the injectors at a much higher rate than normal

OR You have a leak and fuel is pissing out somewhere Check the quick release o rings for cuts or nicks They weep fuel if damaged but are pennies to replace

Its quite easy to catch the rubber 'O' ring on the quick release coupling when you push them home. This leaves a flat spot on the 'O' ring that leaks fuel.

petrol smell

:beerjug: It may not be relevant but I had my 10 plate gs serviced in the week. I was told that a mod was carried out on I think an O ring under the fuel tank re a BMW recall.
If it leaks you get the petrol smell apparantley.:thumb2

How so? I mean how would this happen and how does this manaifest?

Well you described a petrol smell and poor mpg, eventually you told us the smell was from the exhaust after folk had been trying to help in identifying a petrol leak, but even then you only say it's when you start the bike.

As yet..... your tail pipe isn't sooty, if it was or will be, then it's the tps for sure.

It's a good idea to give as much accurate info to help the diagnosis from the start, because you may not have plugged the air sensor back in the air filter cover etc., left your Jaffa cakes in there or not taken the filter out of the box.....who knows?:D:beerjug:

If you have owned one of the new fart types of closed loop cat bikes where they only release flowery air fit fir small children and animals, a R11GS might smell of fuel... An airhead may make you reach for the "scented hankie"...

PS 11/1150's also have one of the most effective tanks for firing fuel back out at fill ups and hey presto... It will leave a... smell of fuel...

11's didn't have quick release fuel lines unless they have been retro fitted and you should be able to change the air filter without removing the tank... Always check the seating of the airfilter and re plug the sensor if you unplugged it...
