Greetings!

I have 6800 miles on my GS1100 and I am in need of some new boots. Which tyres are recommended purely for road use?

I have Michelin T66 at the moment which are not bad but they have become blued on the edges, i suspect from over zealous riding at times. As usual a compromise between grip and hard wearing characteristics may be necessary.

Finally, what is the most cost effective source of such tyres?

Thanks for all suggestions!!!!

My bet would be...

most people will say Metzeler Tourances. As most folks will testify. Look more on this site as there are quite a few threads. On every thread you will probably notice Metzeler Tourances in there and with good reviews.

a good guide is this micapeak link. The tourances are apparently not bad for cupping. The write up is a bit old and does not point this out. But I think my statement is probably true as most seem to say so (at least the folks I spoke to). I prevoiusly had E4s and the front did cup but only in the last few thousand miles. I got almost 10k out of mine. And the last 5k was hard. The first 5 were not so hard as I am new to riding.

The E4s were incredible in the wet. Tourances are the same I'm told but only done 1K so far all dry so can't comment.

Where to get them. Err it can be hard. Like gold dust at times. Got mine from a place I won't recommend as they stripped a wheel stud. Another story.

Oh I read somewhere that switching from T66s to Tourances makes the bike seem lighter, to do with the tyre profile if I remember. Sorry but not sure where I read this.

Hope this helps.

Cupping

What exactly is cupping?

Bob

As JohnnyBoxer says
Cupping is where the tyre tread 'scallops' on the shoulders and wears unevenly.

I often wondered the same thing but a few folks at Princetown saw my front E4 and concurred with JohnnyBoxer on this.

PAUL/STUART
At National Tires in Brecon has two sets left at £137 fitted for GS Members.

try some Avons

purchased a pair of Avon Distanzia's from Carnell's (Riossi!!!) week before last in Liverpool in their mega tyre sale FOR, and I kid you not, the great price of £102 the pair.
don't need them on the bike yet but at that price I'll keep them in the shed for a while.
was in there again this week and they still had another pair left??
give your local Carnell a try (they seem to be mainly frequented by our sports bike riding brethren) and they may still have some left!!

Roger:)
