Hi all,

I'm due to pick up my GSA tomorrow and have been looking at what I can spend more money on .

I'm looking for some guidance from people who have fitted the extras I'm looking at.

I fancy a aftermarket pipe because we all know loud pipes save lives. Don't fancy shelling out for a BMW branded one though so after researching it looks like a Yoshimura will fit the bill nicely. I know there is a thread going for this so will leave that there.

Iv read that a solution is needed to stop crap being sprayed everywhere in wet weather, so I'm probably looking at the mudsling and Avant. Any experience with these, ease of fitting, effectiveness, etc. Or alternatives. Also would a rear mudguard or similar be needed / useful?

Screens - a large touring screen at least as big as the OE GSA one, without the need for additional or replacement brackets.

Radiator guards. Which is best? After a £300 replacement on my street triple I always fit one on new bikes. I really don't know why these aren't fitted as standard by BMW on adventure bikes like triumph do.

Bar risers. Have this fitted to my Tiger. Any issues or recommendations

GiVi Handguard extenders. Again are they any good, easy to fit, anything better?

I'm assuming the cylinder heads don't need additional protection with the GSA crash bars?

Anything else, frame protectors, headlight protectors, etc. Or any suggestions?

Cheers

I've got a LeoVince stainless silencer and Mivv headers. very happy with the sound.

I've used the tinted Puig touring screen, with spoiler through winter and it was fantastic, but 100% need the additional Cymarc brackets. I think the stock GSA screen wobbles excessively anyway.

I've got the Rox pivot risers, but they were too high, so i use some 20mm Touratech risers and they are perfect for me.

Givi hand guard extenders are very good, used mine through winter but took them off last weekend when i went on some lanes as i didnt want to break them.

The BMW bars do flex a bit and can allow the cylinder head to be grazed in a fall. I fitted some MachineArt X Heads, which protect most of the head.

Superglue for the final drive... :nenau

But seriously if your not planning on doing much off-roading then just spend your excess money on fuel, a good camera and go somewhere interesting but don't forget to post up a ride report. :thumb2

Could I suggest a front mudguard extender, rear number plate deflector and remove and store (to replace when selling) that monstrosity that sits over the back wheel. Then, on the non bolt on front, get yourself on the BMW off road course in Wales (even if you do not plan going off road) and learn exactly what these things can do, how much you can do with them (you will be surprised) which will boost your confidence in yourself and on and off road and, should you have a 'wee spill', its not yours! Pick it up , yes on your own I'm afraid, (unless it upside down in a ditch...Simon?) ride on, give it back and when its all over, you can then ride home smugly on your own unblemished beast! Long term wise it is cracking value for money and I am definitely up for Stage 2.

having modified an added extras to previous GSA's my current bike has nought added, I'd suggest youve paid enough for the ownership priviledge, why not ride the bike for a while before deciding on spending any more dosh.
My one concession this time was mirror extensions, they raise and move mirrors further out and I like the better visibility.
Hope this helps

Mudsling and Avant - both very easy to fit. The rest can wait. I think standard silencer is fine, nice sound.

Fender extender to save the front of the engine. Easy fit
Puig for frame infill panels to stop the crap going up the back of yours and your passengers legs. Good fit and quality, look like OE. Easy fit.
Head covers. Easy fit
Givi hand guard extenders. Easy fit and look good.
Headlight protector, clear plastic type, easy fit.
Rox risers up and back type a little bit of a fiddle.

Hey, I got mine today - awesome - been thinking about a screen though

Thanks everyone for the responses.

Hopefully picking it up in a couple of hours :D.
I think as suggested I will probably run it for a few weeks to see how I like it stock, but I will likely put an aftermarket exhaust on, I always do.

So it seems that the Mudsling and Avant to protect the engine and rear suspension, frame Infills to protect the back of the bike / your legs.
Maybe go for hand guard extenders (I do like the look of them), maybe a tinted screen (again like the look of them and will match the hand guard extenders) and bar risers if I feel the need.

On the subject of screen, I struggled to find a sweet spot to cut out noise / buffeting even on full height. When I reviewed the video from my test ride, the wind noise was substantially lower standing up than when sat behind the screen. Is it better to have the screen low when at normal road speeds?

Gramshep offroad training is a great idea, iv fancied doing that fo while.
So if you smash their bike up there is nothing to pay? That's the only thing putting me off.

Thanks again for the info

Re-Screen. I used the Puig touring, takes all wind blast off you and is very quiet, but i didnt get on with the looks, so put a stock size tinted screen on, which i now find more comfortable in the lowest position on the motorway, i only pop it up if its raining.

Brilliant cheers for that, yeah the looks are what are putting me off the Puig, plus the loss of being able to adjust on the fly. I will try on the lower setting on my ride home this aft.
Are you using the tinted BMW screen or aftermarket? The BMW ones seem very expensive compared to other makes.

Mud sling and front fender extender definitely, consider a centre stand bash plate too, spray and debris thrown from the front wheel will grit blast a centre stand in short order, this is a rugged roads item and has done a good job :thumb2

When was that picture taken, Steve?:augie:D

It won't look like that now!

I haven't checked closely but it looks pretty much the same now as then which was 2 years ago, the bash plate has stood up to the errrr bashing really well, I'll take another pic and post it, the chrome headers look the same but that is because they are wrapped in bubble wrap in the garage where they have been for almost 2 years

Yes the bike is supplied and fully covered. They are pretty much in control of the situation and you should not get yourself into too much trouble unless you try something fancy or a "short cut " during 'circuits' where they set you off on a roiund-route and pull you over for a chat every now and then. They even have a spare bike in a van on site if something happens. Enthusiasm is very much encouraged but wild mayhem not! Even my son who came with and is pretty hot on Tiger 800 XC enjoyed the stage one.Another thought; If you can get to the Touratech Travel Event (https://www.facebook.com/events/908912992496478/) you can have a blat around Walters Arena with like minded nutters as well, that is also great fun if slightly scary.. Well to me any way. G

Brilliant thanks. That's something I will definitely look into then.

Update:

I have now ordered
- Mudsling and Avent. Mainly because I got caught in a rain shower yesterday afternoon and my boots, legs and the back of the bike look like they have been sprayed in 'muck'
- GiVi Handguard Extenders, the tinted ones. Added protection and because I think they look cool.
- Wunderlich 40mm Up and Back Risers. Because its quite a stretch to the bars and I have noticed a bit of strain in my shoulders and back after only a short amount of riding.
- Wunderlich Sidestand Enlarger. For extra peace of mind and they seemed reasonably priced
- Yoshimura Satin Black and Polished end can. Like the look and sound.
- OEM Tinted GSA Screen. Managed to get one cheap off of eBay and think it looks cool.

Hopefully all will arrive next week and I can get to work fitting them. I have gone for bits that are hopefully easy to fit and don't require moding the original parts as I've never done anything like this before and don't really have any tools beyond a screwdriver and hammer (I'm that guy that gets his chain tightened at the dealer's )

All my previous bikes have been bought new and I just ordered OEM parts and had the dealer fit them. Then when the time comes to swap the bike with £2k-£3k of extras on, I get screwed with the "we don't pay extra for added parts", "we prefer stock bikes", etc, etc. I don't have the tools/ability/confidence to take them off to sell so I end up with a crap base price trade in value.
I'm looking to change that with this bike and gain some experience/confidence

So After about 2 weeks of ownership I have now dropped the beast. Just been out for a great blast having fitted the Puig touring screen Cymark brackets and up and back 40mm risers. Managed to get a good coat of acf50 on it. So I pulled into my gravel drive. Got off - opened the garage and when I got to get back on the side stand slipped through a bit of gravel and off I came - down she went. A few useful observations to anyone who finds them self with a dropped GSA with a full tank of fuel. Don't try and lift it on your own. 3 of us managed it but it wasn't easy. Crash bars on cylinder head took a bit of the damage but the cylinder cover is badly gouged. Hate to think what that'll cost to fix. Having said that I might just see how it corrodes and replace it later depending on the cost. Anyone have a clue what I might be in for.?? Thanks
