Hi all

I am now due my 2nd annual and 12,000 mile service together.
I was a bit shocked to hear this would cost around the £250 mark.
Is this about right. (my bike is non abs 07 GSA). anybody????

... Sounds about right, depending on which dealer you intend using.

... Don't let them do brake pads if they call you up and say they are over-worn, you will pay through nose and their idea of 'worn' definitely favours purveyors of brake pads. Steptoe can sort you out if you do need a set.

... Apparently the 2008 machines are a wee bit cheaper for a 12,000 mile service.

... However, think yourself lucky you're not riding a Ducati, the credit crunch has put main dealer servicing beyond the reach of many owners :D

If the bike is under 2 years old and coming up for 12000 miles then it should not need the annual service, just the normal 12000 service. It should only need the air filter replacing at that mileage. Spark plugs need replacing at 24k and alternator drive belt at 36k. There is no fuel filter to be replaced. When were the brakes last bled? As it's a non ABS model then that won't be a big job if they should need doing. I think BMW recommend they are bled every 2 years. Gearbox oil is every 24k miles and the rear drive box in theory doesn't need doing. On your bike I think it would have been done at 600 miles.

The other stuff that will need checking is the valve clearances and throttle body balance as well as the usual checking of brakes etc etc.

Have they given you a full quote and a breakdown of what they will be doing for £250?

Very true. At my 18k service the dealer phoned up and told me that the pads would not last through until the 24k and did I want them replaced. I politely declined, and checked them on getting home and found they were fine. They lasted up to the 24k service comfortably.

Why 'shocked'?? (I'm assuming you're getting it done at a main dealer) :nenau

All the 12000 mile services on a number of bikes I've owned have cost about that much - perhaps £50 less on some.

I don't get spending over twelve grand on a bike then quibbling over the servicing costs.

+1. As a matter of interest Custard, how much were you expecting? Did you just hear that or have you been quoted?

Depends where you go but labour rate could be around £60 ph which is the bulk.

All servicing will be around that mark so be prepared and I always budget for that figure. If it`s less, I reckon I`m quids in:thumb

Hi Slowdown
I dont mind paying for servicing, if i think its worth the cost, £250 seams alot for what the other guys on here have mentioned what is included in that service, and as bob says, the bike is under 2 years old so why do I need to pay for an annual and the 12,000 mile.

why do I need to pay for an annual and the 12,000 mile.

You don't,some items on the annual and 12000mile services overlap, just ask for the 12000 service and the relevant annual service items to be done, BVM did this for me at my last service-looking at your location I'd guess they are your nearest dealer ;)

Sounds about right from the bikes I've owned too..
Really it is a lot of money for what is basically an oil and filter change but they have you by the short and curlies when you come to re-sell and they start talking about "FSH"

But as the man said earlier if you can afford to spend £12k on a motorised toy (Assoc of Chief Police Officers) then you can afford the services!...........

I would have been happy with £260. The 54K miles on my 06GSA is quoted at £379 for an inspection service including fitting belt and spark plugs.

12k service on a 955 Tiger is around £400, if you had a most bikes the 12k service would be the 3rd service, (4,8,12) so really the GS is cost efficent to be serviced.

Like someone else has said, if you spend 12k on a bike the service costs should have been taken into account before you parted with your hard earned. For the record as long as I believe I am getting decent value for money I'm happy, but if I think they are taking the P*** then as soon as the warranty is up it's tara main dealer.

But what is annoying is the local BMW dealer (car & bike) is offering car servicing from £80 which makes a non sense of the bike costs.

There are two points here:

1) It's unreasonable to complain unduely about the cost of servicing after you've bought the bike as a bit of research could have avoided the shock of the running costs.

2) The servicing costs are excessive. I can do a 6,000 mile service myself in about 45 minutes as it's one of the easiest bikes on earth to maintain. The cost of both filters (genuine) and decent engine oil is around £50-£60 so on that basis we're paying BMW about £200 an hour labour. Well, actually we're probably paying to keep the showrooms open for at least a few more months.

No, I can't read fault codes and change the software but if it ain't broke I don't mess with it, and if it does break I'd take it to be plugged in.

If you have a bike that's clocking up more than 10,000 a year, is out of warrenty and with this economic climate where second hand values are dropping, I reckon you would ultimately lose less money when you trade in or sell by doing the servicing yourself, or even by another mechanic than continually paying the high servicing costs just to maintain the FSH.

The 54k service is the same as a 6k service so the plugs and alternator belt should not need replacing at that mileage, assuming they have been done properly on earlier services.

£250 sounds like a deal to me. The 12,000 service on my KTM 950 Adv was £360 and they need doing every 4500 miles. This is one of the reasons Im making the jump to GS.

That is correct but they seem to have missed them on the last service. Also I am out of sync on the belt because it was changed ahead of time with warrenty work on the front engine case.

Biscuits - yummy

Hi Custard, I live in Gloucester too and have bought the software to plug in and do diagnostics for my GSA so any worries just pop in and see me at Cotswold Vehicle Electronics - if you bring biscuits we'll do it for free!
