I recently changed to Roadsmart tyres on my GSA and have noticed more vibration on the motorway following the tyre change. I should state up-front that the issues I describe below are not the fault of the tyres, but rather my front wheel.. The Roadsmarts are, without doubt, the best tyres I have ever experienced.
Dealer was very helpful and checked the tyres for me. They are perfectly balanced but there is some lateral movement in the wheel - 1.5mm, which is within BMW's tolerance of 1.7mm.
I'm guessing that I didn't notice this lateral movement before as the standard tyres used softer rubber, at least that's the current theory, also shared by the dealer. It's disconcerting to look at, not to mention the additional vibes on the motorway.
I hadn't noticed this vibration before fitting the new tyres so I guess it could be possible that pure road tyres exacerbate the vibration from wheels that are somewhat out of true.
I have read a few posts on the topic of "Wobbly Wheels" in this forum and the dealer even pointed out that they see a few issues with these wheels from time to time.
I feel that BMW's tolerance of 1.7mm is a little too high, but I have no experience of what is an acceptable lateral deviation from true in spoked wheels. I've read that Woody (a member of this forum) in the US can routinely true these wheels to circa 0.25mm.
Any additional insight into this would be appreciated.
