Well, I've ordered some more HID's for my fog lamps, 6000k this time as they never had any H11's in 4300k. Got them from a U.K seller on ebay. They should be here next week, cost a little more this time, £114 inc p&p> Will let you know what they're like.

Incidentally, the CANBUS never threw up a warning light for the 'lamp out' message when the headlamp was converted which was a bonus!

Take a look here:http://stores.ebay.co.uk/hids-direct

Thanks for you reply, a couple of questions, if i replaced all 4 light should i need the 35w or the 50w . if i fit them in the aux light can the ballast get fixed under the front beak. When i bought my gsa in june last year the fitters at Cannon BMW had problems with the canbus wiring throughing up warning signals when they tried HID lights, have you heard of any problems with this latest generation of HID ballasts thanks Bryan

You dont NEED either the 35 watt or the 50 watt lights ... its purely a choice as to how much power you want the lights to have. Standard HIDs are 35 watt. The 50 watt HIDs are more powerful (and brighter) than standard HIDs by about 50%.

Its possible that as the 50 watt HIDs draw a similar power to the 55 watt factory halogens they are less likely to cause canbus problems. The factory that supplies my 50 watt ballasts says "Our company is the first one that have solved the CANBUS problem (BMW, MERCEDES, and so on)"

Yes the ballasts can fit under the front beak. I have 2 there but I reckon you could easily build a bracket on which you could mount 4 of them there. For photos, see here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpost.php?p=833876&postcount=28

To give you a rough idea of output:
A 55w halogen H7 bulb pumps out 1400 lumens.
An overdrive 55w H7 bulb (50+, 55=110 etc) pumps out about 1650 lumens
a 35 w HID puts out about 3200 lumens
a 50 w HID puts out about 4600 lumens.

A standard BMW, Audi, Porsche or Merc driving around with 2 HIDs and 2 halogen foglights on (pretty standard setup) is getting 9200 lumens (3200 x 2 + 1400 x 2) on to the road on dipped beam. By comparison a standard 1200 GS puts a mere 1400 lumens onto the road ... no wonder the headlight appears crap in comparison to modern cars.

Modern cars have multiple HIDs and almost 10,000 lumens coming out the front of the vehicle on dipped beam, so its up to you what you go for, but unless you go for considerably more than 10,000 lumens, or have more than 4 sources of light on the front of your bike on dipped beam, then you are not going to appear exceptionally bright.

Note also that your eyes see brightness as relative. If you are at the llights, next to a car that is putting out 9200 lumens onto the road, when he drives off, you will appear to be in relative darkness even with a single 35 watt 3200 lumen HID .... Your eyes will have adjusted to the light levels provided by the 9200 lumen vehicle next to you.

Hope that helps :-)

I ride with a single HID and find that very good, I suspect many more may be both an overkill and a potential hazzard to other users, esp if you move to 50 watt units.

Thanks for you reply, have you got the 50watt hid main and dip beam on your GSA.....
have you had any problems with canbus warning lights or blinding people in traffic?
Ive got the AUX lights on my GSA ,i think i had better put HID H11 in them as well, if im going to upgrade the main lights,as they arnt that bright as standard.
Are all the EBAY HID kits the Same....all made in same factory...

Do you think its wise to leave the dip beam alone ?
so not to draw too much attention to your lightship!

Can anyone post the actual dimensions of their ballast units?
I'd be interested if there are any size differences.
Mine is 5" (including connectors) by 3 1/8" by 1 3/8" for a 35W unit.
If there are smaller units available I'd like to know.

I have NuXen ballast 90mm x 70mm x 31mm (inc connectors) used on main beam. It fits under the windshield bracket.

You know me so well Simone...:D

Hopefully the 6k burners should soon be installed in the fog lamps with a Little 'DD' modification!

I lurrrrv the darkness!

4300 is white, 6000 is hint of blue, the rest get violet, I ues the 6000 and like it :thumb

Les, Matin is doing single at £50 and double at £80, so I've pretty much decided to go for the double at 6000k - I just wanted to check though, I presume these are the lower wattage kits; there seems to be some suggestion that the 30-ish watt can make canbus complain, whilst 50-ish doesn't. How many folk with 30 watt have had canbus problems, and what are the symptoms (e.g. does it trigger the yellow flashing light permanently - I'd imagine that's pretty annoying...)?

I've used a bosch 6000k 35 watt ballast and bulb with no issues/problems.

I use a 35w on the low beam and no problems, the only time you can get a problem is if the battery is low.
Got a PIAA in the high beam and two FF50's on the high beam.

Are you getting two hid's or do you just want the one, will split with you if you want.

Thanks guys.

I was going to split a pair with Billy, but Matin was offering to ship singles for £50; I decided that for the sake of another £30, I might as well get a pair.

Who is Matin and how do I contact him/them?

Thanks,

Andy

Mention the UKGSer website when you email him. He's had a few bollockings and has said he will look after tossers with extra care. Expect 3-4 weeks to do liver (sorry, deliver). Might get stung with additional £15 import duty but he has told me this is unlikely with his current supplier. Still cheaper than anywhere else.:thumb2
