H.I.D lamps

Colebatch, can you get hold of smaller 35 w ballasts?

I want to put hid into my micro de's not got a lot of room for ballasts on the 650 :blast
 
Does anyone know how to reduce the lag between hitting the in switch and getting full power ?

I have 35W units from Mr Matin off e-Bay for both dip and main, but would really like to reduce the lag, currently between 2 and 6 seconds, depnding on whether the bulb is warm or not.

Is it the bulb, the ballast or both?

Hids4U claim to have virtually no lag on their "Pro" kit, anyone used one?
Is the lag on teh 50W units greater or lesser than the 35W units?

FWIW the Bosch 35w unit I have in my dipped beam comes on pretty much instantaneously and is at full brightness within a second - 6 seconds seems a bit extreme :confused:

Yes I can ... but not a lot of point as there are plenty of people who can get the 35 watt kits anyway ... if you look on the likes of ebay (see earlier in this thread)

I only started getting the 50 watt kits in myself cause I couldn't find any other supplier for a vaguely reasonable price.

I have a spare pair of genuine Hella 35 watt HID ballasts sitting around .... which I could pair up with a couple of H3 burners for the micro DEs, but as my pics on the previous page show, the 35 watt ballasts are not necessarily smaller than the 50 watt ones.

I have never personally seen the eBay kits so cant comment on them, but I have had 2 pairs of HIDs4U kits and they are just regular Chinese made kits. I am not sure which factory supplies HIDs4U but they have a lovely profit margin on them.

The more advanced Chinese manufacturers are making 21, 42 and 50 watt kits as well as the 35 watt kits. The better manufacturers also make the proper two burner / two ballast true bixenon H4 bulbs, rather than the cheaper, less reliable, incorrectly positioned light source H4 "telescopic" bulbs that are passed off as bixenon. Beware of anyone flogging H4 HIDs that do not have two separate offset light sources ... such as this: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showpost.php?p=824246&postcount=113

Without knowing which Chinese manufacturers the eBay guy and HIDs4U use, its hard to really form too much of an opinion. But I do know HIDs4U use the crappy telescopic H4 burners when they sell H4 kits. I would be very wary of assuming they are better quality just because they sell them for £200 rather than the £80 the eBay guy sells them for. My personal assumption (without having seen the eBay kits) is they are much the same ... just the eBay guy many GSers have used sells only 4700K kits, and HIDs4U sells only 6000K kits
 
the problem is the limited space on my bike, I already have two hid kits on the bike, a feat in itself on a f650 :D

The only place left where i can fit a pair of ballasts that size is under the beak, which turns with the steering. To get it to work i'd have to reinforce the beak mounts and work out a way of routing cables so that they don't rub on anything, i'd also have to extend the leads between the ballast and the bulbs.

Might be an interesting project :mmmm

perhaps it would be better to uprate the existing bulbs first and see how i like them :D
 
Well just fitted the other half of nedflanders 6k 35w kit to my 12GSA, OMG, the diff between the dip and my main beam (a halfords super blue) is quite extreme, looking forward to a night ride, just to see the diff

are still able, and willing, to supply 50W ballasts and bulbs ? I am thinking of upping the main beam to 50W, leaving the dipped at 35w.

Its for 1200GS so will be H7, prefer to keep to 4300/5000 K.

Yes mate, I still have 5000K 50 watt H7s about the place. Normally I wouldnt split a pack but ... for tossers... I guess we can do that. :beerjug: You just want 1 50w burner and 1 50w ballast right?

Ideally we find a taker for the other half of the kit.

Anyone want a half H7 kit? ... 50 watt. 5000K for 12 GS/A ... £65 plus p&p ...

OK thats cleaned me all out of H7s. I will try and get a few more in next month.

Still have a few sets of H1s (50w, 5000K) left from the current load, which would suit the 1150s, and the odd H3 and H11 units if there is any interest.

Fitted my Hid dip light today & had to make a bracket for the ballast
I am going to have some made out of s/steel & it may be
cheaper for 5 or 10 brackets is there anyone interested In having one. pm me.

How have people been getting the HID cables to the bulb holders?? Have you been knocking out the hole in the cover and using a grommet or feeding through with the original wiring?? I've read elsewhere that breaking the cables from the ballast isn't a good idea and mine have quite chunky waterproof connectors on so they don't thread through too easily.

Pictures would be nice.

HID Lights

I have an 07 GSA and being a complete numpty with all things electrical/mechanical/female I've read through the last 7 pages of threads with excitment and dread.

I could really do with updating my lights (they really are crap) but have no idea how to go about it.

Do any of techy people offer a service where I can turn up on my bike, pay some cash and ride away with it all done and dusted? Upgrading the exisiting lights would be a first step or, if necessary buying into an additional set (to compete or repalce the BMW fog lights).

I did email BTBR but he's only just completed his first GS and the Adventure is some way off.

I live near Oxford but can travel. Cash and adulation is waiting.

Any help much appreciated.

I know he's top dog when it comes to servicing, fixing and fettling on 11x0's but not sure if he's all right with 12's. :nenau
