H.I.D lamps

Les, I think you need to develop a production one of these, that would be useful: :-) (Its slightly easier with the Adventure as you have (a) the crashbar and (b) the light bar that attaches to the crashbar to give good a good mounting base for the ballast grid.

I've got one of Les' Under-Beak HID Brackets (excellent bit of kit by the way (and cheap)!) and am looking for some advice to make the installation easier/save so much trial fitting.

People have said not to allow the ballast go further back than the rear of the oil cooler (because, under heavy braking the forks could nit the Ballasts) - I presume that this is 'no further back than the rear of the bracket?

I have 2 options for miounting that I've thought of:

Option 1 fits the ballasts sideways such that the wiring (12V feed and output to HID burners) come out of the side (see pic 1)

Option 2 fits the ballasts such that the wiring comes out of the back (would be further back than the rear of the bracket, but would be between the fork stantions - If you'r braking that hard, you should be stearing straight ahead?) - this gives better weather protection (see pic 2)

My questions are:
- are the ballasts far enough forward in option 1 and 2?
- which option do you think would work best?

These ballasts are for the Micro DE HID conversion, and I've not decided whether to use these 35W ones or Colebatch's (very bright) 50W ones.

All advice much appreciated.

I would place them sideways (pic 1) as you'll be taking the wires around the side of the beak anyway, and there is less chance of damaging the connectors

I'm still waiting to take delivery of my new 1200GS. Having come from an 1100 Pan European I appreciate that the GS will be lacking in the headlight department and so I'm interested in fitting a pair of HIDs.
However, are there any warranty issues in doing so? Are dealers/BMW sympathetic towards owners who like to fettle their bikes and alter the original spec?
Any views would be appreciated.

Dave D.

colebatch,
I am fitting one of your 50 watters and I don't know the wiring colours. The instructions tell me that the Red wire is + and the Black wire is -. But my ballast wires are Blue and Black. Can you tell me the polarity colours?

Cheers
Chris

I dont seem to have received anything ... just checked again and in my junk mail, but nothing there.

Did you send to correct email address Andy?

So is the special price plus the cost of sponsorship more or less than the normal price?

Andy

PS I emailed you two days ago with no reply.

Just a quick thank you to Les for replacing both my lights with HID's on Saturday. A really neat job and the difference has been amazing. Now I can see way ahead at night and need sunglasses when I pass road signs. :thumb

I got mine done by him on Sunday and I am very happy with the result.

I would highly recommend. The bracket fitted the adventure perfectly. Les has some pics which he should hopefully post up.

Thanks Chris, nice to have met you, glad you are happy with the result :thumb2

Couple of pictures with the new style HiD in place on your lovely clean ADV :D

The bracket takes into account the second part of the engine bars for Tossers with the spotlights fitted.

And a picture of an experimental MkII bracket for the ADV which will allow 4 to 6  HiD's fitted.

Also an unashamed plug for my now supply and fit service for HiD on the 1200and ADV :thumb2

I was very particular about the placement of all those flies.

And the A34 was really nice.

Hello all,

just a question about the HID bulb: do you have to drill a hole in the cap of the light to pass the new wiring harness? wich means it will not be waterproof anymore....? or where do you route the wires?

-is the new bulb a H7,for both lights? Thanks , Pogo

Yes to drill, but no it will still be waterproof as you put a grommet there, don't drill the whole to big.

And yes again.
