H7 LED Main Beam

They should actually work but I don't think it would be recommended as they are fog light bulbs and I would say the light pattern would be all over the place if you are using them as your dipped beam.

Indeed - response from shop:

"they have no form of beam pattern or light projection so although they will look good you won't be able to see where you are going."

Ooookay... So £20 buys you an LED bulb with no beam pattern, but the (fundamentally) same bulb with beam pattern costs 3 or 4 time that? Why? Maybe I'm naive or poorly-informed or overly-cynical or all of these, but that seems bogus to me?

These are costly compared to may other LED bulbs BUT quality isn't cheap. The LED element in any fitment might last for 30,000 hours but few bulbs or even full lamps will ever get that far. Something always fails in the system somewhere. In the long run, some initially costly bulbs will be low cost compared to "cheap" alternatives.

Sometimes quality is cheap. And IMO/IME, expensive doesn't always necessarily equate to quality. Friend of mine has a €1000 Fender Strat. Fucker won't stay in tune. For €1000, I'd expect my guitar to stay in tune.

The LED bulb on sale for £80 may the the exact same bulb on sale elsewhere for £20. How does the punter know? Companies sell stuff to make money, not to make punters happy. Now more than ever, punters are terribly gullible and sellers are capitalising on this, to the cost of people who can see the rip-off. I worked in Kinsale for a few months a while back - lovely town, but everything is more expensive than surrounding towns - B&Bs, meals in restaurants, beers, Mars bars. Just because the tourists will pay the prices. So the locals (and visiting workers) have to pay those same high prices.

The notion that expensive always/automatically = quality and cheap always/automatically = rubbish is bullshit. IMO.

This thread about upgrading headlight bulbs is on a forum for bikes that cost what - £10,000 new? More? And they need to have their headlights upgraded by the customer?! FFS! That IMO on some level undermines the "expensive = quality" perception. The reason I asked my question was that I'm considering an 1100GS, notorious for having a shitty headlight. But that's a dated design on a bike at least 17 years old - for under £2000, I'll forgive it having a shitty headlight, and I'll happily include upgrading the headlight in the price I'll pay... But on a bike I paid over £10,000 for? I'd expect it to come as standard with a headlight capable of illuminating the moon.

Bit of an unintentional rant there - soz... Not dissing 1200s, not dissing 1200 owners, not trying to hijack OP's thread - just saying...

This thread is about upgrading the main beam on a Hexhead a bike that has been around before LED tech was avalible.

The LED bulb I fitted was not the cheapest but it was cheap compared to alternative more main beam light options and it was also being sold with some consideration to how it would fit a Hexhead

As an upgrade I think it represents very good value for money even at c£70

I don't find the the dip beam and fog light combo bad, in fact adjusted well I think it's very good which is based on my experience - I do a lot of night riding where I want light for lighting the way

I like higher prices in nice places, it keeps the low life away and as for the visiting workers they need to remember the tourists are paying their fucking wages, so let's have a less of the them an us attitude and where's my fucking coffee!

Bottom line your rant is shit :D

Maybe you won't be so confused after the coffee? :thumb

I have some flood pattern LED lamps (four elements inside). One is doing fine. The other filled with water on it's 2nd wet ride and wont work after drying out. That's £20 down the pan. £40 really because 1/2 a pair is not much use.

Has anyone used LEDs in the BMW aux headlights? H11 I believe. I want useful light but with an HID-50 headlight I don't need loadsapower

I am running these at present in my Aux lights.............I was sceptical but the build quality seems great and I'm fairly happy with the performance (I would like them a little stronger)

In the end I fitted pencil beam LED spots that work with main beam and 70mm halo rings (also LEDS) that work with dipped beam.

Sent somehow.

Mine has just thrown up a dipped beam LampF. Cue another grovel under the bike to sort out the HID ballast connections.

Has anyone tried the these? I have them in my car .. Fantastic upgrade from standard Osram bulbs.

Osram night-breaker-unlimited

I dont want to be like one of those honda civic guys who blind everyone with HID or LED in halogen reflectors .. But I hate the power of my lights..

After the usual faff to remove the beak and screen, I've not been able to find my HID fault though the dip beam burner does look dodgy.
I've cut my losses & put the halogens back for now but fancy a pair of LED bulbs.
I wonder if anyone makes a GS specific bulb. I don't fancy leaving the bulb covers off to make space for LED heat sinks.

Get the SOL2 ones bendy, you get new covers and only the heatsink is exposed. A good coat of ACF50 keeps any corrosion and moisture away.

They look great

How is the cut off on the dip beam? Will it blind other drivers?

They are quite pricey once you factor in the crazy money for the rubber cap and 14 euro post.

Go the beginning of the thread, it's about an LED bulb with a specific cover for a GS :D

And I'll say it again... just put one in the main beam, leave the rest halogen.

The cut of in the dip and aux lights are very precise with halogen which means you can adjust them up higher than you can with a HID or LED
Because they are higher the main beam now points into the distance and not at the ground meaning the LED in your main has more impact
An LED in the main is not on all the time meaning less chance of issues, mines been perfect

Buy one good quality LED and stick in your main beam, IMO anything else is vanity :D

Oh dear i must be vain then, as i have one in both and have no problems. Indeed the bike sailed the MOT last year without issue.

I'm with Delboy777. The HID on dip has been excellent good cutoff and much better vision on unlit roads. With HID on main beam there's a slight delay on warm up but not an issue.

With halogens on main and dip the main beam is all but useless. Its extra light fro main is drowned out by the dip beam and there is not enough angular separation to point it further down the road without setting the dip beam dangerously high. With OEM auxiliary headlights the lack of main beam is even worse. There's just too much foreground light for the puny main beam to have any useful effect.

Anyhow the HID seems to have a fault that I cant spend any longer tracing so for the time being I'm back with halogen. As for E80 for a single LED with plastic cover I'll just get myself a large rubber grommet to do the job. Cut it wrap around bulb base and superglue the join. I'd bet its cheaper to get new bulb covers from BMW.
