Had an OFF

Had a slow speed off last week, an idiot reversed into me hitting my left pannier knocking me backwards and over to the right.

Righ pannier hit the kerb edge denting the box, left pannier now diamond shape and a couple of minor scratches to the engine guards bars and cylinder head cover.

Me, just got a knackered shoulder.

Anyway, my question to you all wise and wonderful people is this, I have just had a phone call from the dealer doing the inspection and quote for repair, bear in mind that this is a non-fault claim and I aint having to pay a penny..

They have just told me that the rear frame has been knocked out of line and is bent..

They didnt go into detail, just said that the quote for work has gone off to the insurance company and they will have to see what they say. Her words were "theres quite a bit of damage!"

So, if frame is bent, surely they cant bend it back again as its tubular, surely they cant cut and weld in a new part...

If the above is true then the only other options are new frame or written off...

Whats your thoughts..

Sounds like a new rear frame is required - which shouldn't preclude repair, if it is a new GSA - You don't say what bike it is.

As the rear frame just bolts on as a seperate unit I'd expect they will just fit a new one. Frames can be straightened but I'd be surprised if it was worth the cost. You may be surprised how much the total bill will be as in general anything that's sustained even a scratch will be replaced rather than repaired, then there's the labour costs on top. Silencer OK? If it's scratched it'll be written off too.

Sorry to hear about your accident, glad you are OK.

As you say its a non fault claim, take what they offer (even a new bike). With the exception of a write off, any of the bits they replace are still yours so you can ask for them back. So if they replace a lightly scratched screen or exhaust you can ask for it back and either keep it as a spare or put it back on and keep the shiny new one for when you sell the bike on. You can make arrangement with the insurers for the ownership of a written off bike, but you whould have to really want it.

Another trick is to see if there is an aftermarket part for thesame price as the OEM bits that you fancy. I had a BOS exhaust in exchange for the original stainless steel pipes which is a great improvement . I still have the original, perfectly serviceable exhaust.

Get the best deal you can out of this difficulty. Hope you get it sorted out soon.

I am open to them giving me a new bike, but as usual there may be a shortfall in the price, hopefully there are still a few '07s not sold as new that sitting in a warehouse with nobody buying them as the 08 is around.

I dont really want a 'fixed' one if the frame was bent, DO I

The 1200 doesn't have a frame in the conventional sense, just bits fastened to the engine.

As has been said they can simply replace the bent rear frame section; It's just a large bolt-on bracket, in effect, so you won't be getting a "fixed" one....

Just had Vines on the blower, only after I chased them up, they have had confirmation from the assessor that all is ok to proceed with repairs.

Total value just over £4k... all from a knock over at slow speed..

Anyway, good news that its going to be repaired, new subframe etc. bads news is delay in getting parts from germany..

also going to get warranty claim in for corrosion on the engine cover at the front, gearbox cover and rusting of the back wheel.

Then!! a full service and annual inspection at my expense /

Anyway, sounding good at the minute, just need to sort out personal injury claim and I'm done.

Don't forget to ask for the old parts, they may try it on & say the ins company get them (they don't, but someone will have them away........) cos you can guarrantee someone will make money on them if you don't..............

Had an Off Update

Accident 21st august, now 24th September still waiting for the bike to be repaired.

Total cost of replacement parts and labour.......£3847!!! lucky for me not my bill...

Vines are also doing a good number of warranty fixes too, especially the gearbox case as this has blown the paint from underneath the laquer..

So now been without bike for over a month, starting to get used to driving around in a tin can again,, please help...

How much sounds like yet another dealer trying it on. just because the bikes are expensive ,why is any contact regarding repair or anything the same ££££££££££
good idea get the old parts they are yours i would want every old nut and bolt if it was me bet they don't give you all the old bits.

You are not paying for it.... the third party who caused your downfall is....get it replaced and everything else that needs doing while you are at it.

If the bike is weitten off, they will find you a fresh one of similar age / mileage (or cash if they cannot) and will / should give you a similar hire bike whilst they set about repairs / replacement.

A friend of mine whose little Honda 125 was run over by his wife "why should I look in the mirror in the drive" has had a hire bike (off her insurance) for well over a month.

The damaged parts they replace belong to the insurance company, not to you. It makes no difference if it's a write-off, they still do. It's called salvage. Yes, you can ask for them back and the insurer may give you them, or can charge you or tell you to p**s off.

I has a simliar a while back..rear ended by a complete ******. New Sub Frame and as good as new.
