Had my bike stolen last night

As above. They steal any bikes, enough to fill a container and then ship it out. People pay x amount per container regardless of what's inside. You and me would think why not new stuff, but if they're being paid £500 per container, you'll just fill it.

Sorry to hear that. When I had an attempted garage break-in, a nearby shop had CCTV which may have captured them. But police said even if it did show anything they could not use it as evidence because there were no signs notifying the public that CCTV was in action! I'm sure the police get just as P'd off as we do regarding the bureaucracy.

I agree. They will try to find an anomalie in any claim just to avoid paying out.

It was the first time I'd ridden it into London (and the last...).
It was actually to visit my dentist (an old friend of mine) and the bike was stolen when we went out for dinner. It was parked opposite his surgery and he has been to the shop with the CCTV and they are going to let him have a copy so we can do our own investigation.
My theory is that these little shits drive round bike parks on the off chance there will be something tasty there.
Even though I'd only had the bike since September I was starting to "bond" with it and it certainly leaves a really bad feeling.
My search for a replacement has started, the next painful thing is to await the paltry offer I know I'm gonna get from the insurers ("10 years old, well that'll be worth pennies then....")

The landlord of the very large HSBC office block by Southwark Bridge fitted them. Several London boroughs fitted them. Bikers don't use them. Trust me.

So what is the best way to secure a bike with a chain and ground anchor? Presumably if you attach it around the wheel it's relatively easy to undo the wheel and take the rest of the bike?

You presume correctly.

Through the frame. They may still nick your wheels... But you'll still have your bike.

There's an R1 wheel (and nothing else) still chained to a post in Islington. It's been there for several years.

One bit of free advice. If you buy a decent chain, buy a decent lock. Someone abandoned a stolen FireBlade behind my house. A strong chain and a crappy padlock, they'd simply cropped. The bike was probably abandoned to see if it had a tracker fitted, or simply hidden for an hour or two. When it vanished again, they left the chain behind.... I still have it.

If I was engaged in the stealing of motorcycles, it would be quite a good way of working efficiently. Not so much on the off-chance; more in the absolute certainty that there would be a bike that was easy / worth stealing every hour of the day and night.

BMW R1150 GS Adventure registration LB04 YZS

Stolen between 7.15 pm and 9.00 pm from motorcycle parking bay on Addison Avenue, junction with Holland Park Avenue, London W11.

At one time a few years ago that particularly area was prone to GS's being stolen, or attempted thefts. A few of my customers had incidents with their GS's being got at.
One chased the van down the road one night with the rear doors open and clanging against all the parked cars...

There used to be a small generic motorcycle place back around the sheperds bush area that, for some reason, used to have lots of GS parts for sale........... wonder if it's still there ?

The Royal Borough of kensington & Chelsea have ground anchors in their bays. But you can't use them if you have a "big feck off" chain, as it won't go through the small half loop that folds out from the ground.........

Maybe another padlock would go through loop. Not as secure perhaps but really how good are the folding anchors?

It sounds like a tracker and SIM contract could be worth having. There must be somewhere to hide it for long enough to catch the gits.

Yeaaah well , if you go to those extremes why not do what I did and move to a place where this shit doesn't happen. I Never lock my house or car, and never wormy about stuff being missing when I come back .................. its worth a lot and it changes ones perspective on mankind ..

That was my thought, too. I have an '02 GS/A and never even lock it when I'm in Stockholm as I assume the surrounding mikes are more attractive. This makes me think I need a lock.

Sorry to hear about your bike as we had two of ours stolen last week.

They should start chopping fingers off. You always think what you would do to theses bastards if you caught them.

I have spent 20 years training in jujitsu, which is basically self defense, unarmed combat stuff. Only once have I ever had to use it when attacked by four youths. Initially I was going to break every bone in their body and half way through had the horrible realisation that I could and would probably end up being prosecuted for GBH.

In some respects it's probably better that we don't see these low life's when they steal our property as it would all probably backfire on us. The frustration of being violated by these cnuts is a lot to bear.
