My 08 GSA has been sitting in the garage for a few weeks so i decided to take it to work today. I dropped it down off the main stand and noticed that the steering was tighter going left to right. I moved it fully lock to lock and heard a crack. Which seemed to put things back to normal.
Done my commute to work and as i was getting off the bike i noticed movement in the handlebars. I can move them a few mill up and down which i have never noticed before
Just checking for ideas and if it is safe to ride home.

If you are worried I would dig out the tool kit assuming the bike has one or borrow a Allen or Torx key and check the bolts. Don't worry about the exact torque for now and just give them a good tighten up until home.

Had a look last night, removed the bmw cap at the head stock. Under it was starting to rust i had a go at tightening the alan key and the bolt under ant they are both tight. It looks is if there has been a washer or something which has corroded and disappeared which has left play at the head stock.

All the way up in Coleraine

Is there not a boyo in Garvagh does BM's?

With that Or Billy McCutheon on Ormeau Rd
Mototech in Lower Ballinderry
Wilson ????? IN Ballyrobert N'abbey

Or even if you are out and about I'd have a scally at it for you

I powder coated my scratched headstock when I had the frame done. I found the top steering bearing was well past it's best. Surprising because it's not heavily stressed like normal bike steering bearings.
You will need a hot air gun to shift the retaining nut and fill the space under BMW badge with waterproof grease.

Are you familiar with Bottom the series ? look at the film this clip come from Guest house Paradiso really funny :D

ah yes. :thumb2
Didn't like the series / but the film looked good - must see if i can find it on DVD.

Heads up!

Please note! You need a Load of heat to break the loctite on the top bolt

If yo don;t soften it it will gall the alloy and you will have a frame repair needed

If you decide to take the headstock off you'll need to unbolt the fork leg tops. The fork tubes have little air bleed screws loosen to let air out as the tubes drop out of the way. When rebuilding pull up the tubes and close the screws so you'll get a bit of air suspension.

Plus 1 for Ade and Kevin Turvey.

From handlebars to underwear ...
