Hi all, wierd stuff happening to my 05 gs.

I commute on it every day to work, rode in today and pparked up as normal in the bike shed at work, steering lock on, keys out alarm set disclok on, as you do.

an hour later walked to check over the bike and heard funny noises, the starter motor was turning the engine over on its own, ran over in a panic, nothiing would stop it, kill switch, ignition key, alarm nothing, then it stoppped on its own, couple of guys came over from the site and they said it had been doing that every 20 minutes or so.

What do you think it could be, zfe, computer ??

The simplest place to look would be the starter solenoid. If there's 12V on the input to the solenoid when the bike's turning over, the problem is somewhere else, and if not, the problem is the solenoid.

Yes i did think of this but the problem is trying to get the bike to replicate the problem again :ChrisKelly

My concern is that it tries to engage on its own whilst riding :blast:blast

It'll make funny noises but the flywheels direction of rotation is the same as the starter rotation, so it shouldn't lock up

I also would go to a dealer and explain the situation to them

It sounds to me as if something in the control unit is requesting a start ????

OR something nearby has a very strong electro magnetic field and is influencing the bikes brain

There was a bike (non bmw) in my local shop with this problem last week. It turned out that the wiring loom had 9 cut/broken wires at the headstock where the loom flexes due to the steering. There was a slight burr on the clamp which had sliced through causing the dammage. When the bike was on the sidestand with left hand lock, ie normal parked position, it tried to start itself. Don't know if this is possible with CANbus.

Dowse in sacrificed sacred lamb’s blood, hang two crosses from pendants on the handlebars, and sprinkle holy water in a circle around it

…then call for a priest! :yikes

……it’s the only way! :augie

I think you need this gentleman.....

Check the starter relay under the seat for corroded terminals or water ingress.

Thanks for all your replies guys....

So on further inspection it's got to be an electrical fault, I have just tested the small trigger wire on the starter motor and with the ignition on it has a permenant 11.8 volts, ignition off, 3.8 volts, but the bike will not start, no movement at all from the starter, i am not sure if the starter has also bunt out, I spoke to CW motorcycles on the phone and they said it could be a zfe fault, and that bmw would probably offer good will, but now i will have to pay them to collect it as well and maybe a starter as well :augie:augie

Anyone else had a similar issue ????

Ok after more probing have found the starter relay to be ****ed it was badly corroded and must be tracking voltage across it's pins, I jumped a wire from the battery +ve to the starter and it turns ok so it hasnt burnt out, I have cleaned the pins on the relay and socket but it didnt start, took the yellow cover off the relay and pressed the contacts and hey presto it starts, so I will order a new relay tommorow.

So if you beloved GS takes a life of its own and starts under its own power and will check the relay first instead of worrying about a new computer !!!!!

Is this the relay under the seat where the toolbox sits over? If it is I`ve looked at mine and it`s in great condition. I think having some sort of hugger helped a lot keeping the water from spraying directly onto the rubber strap hole. Might help putting some silly coon sealant round the strap hole.

It's all there guys, post no 9.:blast:blast:blast

Yes thanks Adam, you know us bikers we always look for a more complicated reason :augie:augie:augie:D:D:D

BMW have no stock, but CW have sent me one from a customers bike :D:augie:augie:augie if its your I will appologise now :augie:augie

£11.00 plus, ....
