Have I got a problem developing

im having the same issue with the k12gt. a mate said the switch is farked and just replace the bottom bit. the part fits most beemers from what i have read on a parts site.

I sprayed some Electro Klene into the barrel and so far the problem has not recurred. If it starts doing it on a more regular basis I will replace the ignition module.

It could be the ignition switch or it could be a cracked wire to the switch. If waggling wires (while it's acting up) sorts it out you'll know the issue is wiring. But a new switch solves all options and has to be the best option.

how easy is it to replace? will i have to take the fairings off?

I did mine with a screwdriver with the correct torx bit in from underneath without removing any panels,

I forgot to replace mine when I did the steering bearing. I had to take the headlight/instruments off again to get at the job.

Do not use that SHIT on or near the Switchgear !!!! The seals on BMW switchgear microswitches seem to be made from some sort of latex which upon meeting WD40 it disintegrates! and then you get the flashers staying on syndrome etc etc

Get a product by Fuchs Silkolene called "SilkOpen" its a graphited penetrating aerosol and is excellent at freeing locks and the graphite leaves them lubricated rather than WD which dries out

This problem is becoming more regular, especially on F series twins, I understand that there is now a Micro switch in the base of ignition switches and this has a habit of sticking open and worse still it sticks closed (i.e. as a made contact) and you cannot switch off the bikes

I changed the battery a couple of days ago, and now I can't reset the clock. I think the switch cluster on the left side is sticking, and not allowing me to complete the sequence of presses. My question is that I have 3 cans of spray, but which to use to hopefully free up the switch ( 1 ) Multi purpose silicone oil ( 2 ) Electronic contact cleaner or ( 3 ) Brake & parts cleaner ? PS the bike is a 2015 GS.

Any advise welcome......:beerjug:

If it's a 2015 gs are you not in the wrong section. I'm sure you will get more ridicule in the wc section

Since I used the electrical cleaning spray in the ignition barrel last year I have not had any further problems.

Thanks Lord Snooty for your reply...:thumb

I searched for a thread relating to switches, and this thread came up. I will try to see if it works tomorrow.

Thanks again.

What happens is, by pure luck, the lubricant runs down through the barrel (which in effect is open at the bottom)

and into the offending ignition module and lubricates/ cleans the sticking micro switches- very hit and miss though when you open the ignition module lol

Who knows? The spray I used is not so much a lubricant but a cleaner that evaporates fairly quickly - I'll get the exact name of the product when I get home later.

Whip the switch off the bike. Give it a blast of contact cleaner and refit to the bike. When if finally throws in the towel you'll know what's needed to replace it.
