My son rode my Xchallenge the other day and commented that the steering felt funny and it didn't want to turn in very easily.

Got me thinking that I'd better check the headset bearings.

Found them to be quite notchy and as they had obviously deteriated slowly I hadn't noticed the decline. The bottom bearing was dry and the top only had the minimum of grease and when removed neither felt that good.

Checked the micro fische and ordered the parts as stated (except the bearings, got them from local bearing supplier). When I stripped out the headset, the parts didn't correspond to the fiche list.

So now I have some bits left and had to use some of the old bits. The fitting order was different to the picture also.

Anybody else had this problem?

It's been a while since i last did mine so i can't remember off the top of my head, but they are due for replacement again.

Found this diagram:

Which parts do you have a surplus of? Apart from the bearings it just looks like a pair of washers top and bottom?

I found that washer 10 needs to go below bearing cup 11.

The fiche says there should be 2 x no 8 and 1 x no 11. When I dismantled my headset I actually had 2 x no 11 and 1 x no 8.

And yes the picture doesn't show all the parts and seems to show some of the bottom set and some of the top set?
