Heated grips availibility?

I've had a peruse of Motorworks and Motobins websites and it looks on the face of it that the BMW heated grip kit is no longer available, is this the case?
And if so, can anyone recommend a suitable aftermarket kit that is nice and easy to fit, works well and is reliable?
This is for my 1988 R80GS BTW.

Personally I don't like the on/off switch its a tactile thing. but it has not stopped working,
I've had both BMW and these, well on 2 bikes now, soon to be 4

Hope they have improved, I got pissed of with having to plug in wires running down my arms and then out the bottom of my jacket. The final straw was when they burnt me in the wet, didnt last a winters riding

I agree.

I suffer from Reynauld's Syndrome (frozen white finger) in my right hand and only heated gloves keep the circulation flowing as heated grips don't warm the back of your hand (I have extended hand guards as well).

The trailing wires are a pain though.

Mine are Gerbings (which are not cheap ).

Anyone have any experience of fitting this kit? It looks from the picture that the wiring runs inside the bars, is this the case? And if so is a change of bars required or will it fit the standard bars?

Cheap, easy to fit and get b*&&%y hot.

That looks like the official BMW kit which I picked up through a dealer a few months ago and it does mean routing the cables through the bars and out a hole at the headstock.

It comes with the fittings to plug into the wiring loom and the switch for the opening on the panel.

In the instructions it shows where to drill the hole in the bars but when I took mine off to do so I found the ole already there. Might be worth checking yours.

Having baulked at the £300+ I was quoted by my dealer for retro-fitting heated grips to my HP2, I'm now going the Symtec route. I've had them on 3 of my previous bikes and really rate them. Easy to fit and unobtrusive, I'm fitting them with 1150 grips which are a bit softer than the 1200's standard offering.

Just waiting on Motorworks to deliver my throttle side grip which is out of stock .

I take it the wire goes in to the end of the bars? And therefore you can't use handguards that bolt in to the end?

one works / one dont (i got to check that out ) / adequate, but good enough to stop frost setting into fingers.

best i've ever used was a set of "Klan" wrap around with velcro jobbies. toasty and comfy.
but i dunno if an airhead would put out enough current to use those ones.
- i'd worry about flat battery.

It's looking like a toss up between the Daytonas and the Oxfords at the moment. The Tech 7s that Kenny posted are nice and cheap but I can't see if they have different heat settings.

Oxfords on mine - the variable heat is very nice to have. They get bl**dy hot turned up full, half way or so is great most of the year with plenty left in hand (groan . . . ) for the really foul weather.

Mine are 5 years old and working great, I'd buy them again without hesitation.

Oxford did have a recall a coupe of years ago on their heated grips, might be worth checking yours are ok. Apparently, the heater elements were bonded too close to the surface and were becoming exposed in some cases.

I'd guess at 5 years old yours are probably fine, but might be worth a check.
