Heated grips insulating tape

Deat GSers need your lights,

I am about to repair the heated grips on my 1100 GS and have just removed the stock brown insulating tape that protects the heating elements. It looks like this (although many of you know how it looks!):

Does anyone know what this tape is and how should one ask for it? If not, what would you use as an alternative?
(I am pretty sure I have seen this material before, probably in engine or transformer windings, but I am not sure and the professional winders I asked don't know a thing...)

And, finally, yes, I really had to remove the tape!

I might consider trying THIS if I was concerned about the elements temperature but many PVC insulation tapes have a 100C temerature rating.

I'd probably put the polyester tape on the left hand bar before the wired element to insulate it from the metal and cover the element with PVC tape.

I think you are on the right track. Try asking your local armature winders, it looks like the stuff they use in windings on electric motors.

That's what I'm talking about! I already visited a couple of winders and they 'haven't seen anything like this before'....

Even easier would be to try this STUFF...heatshrink sleeving.

Good morning to all,

just wanted to let you know, masking tape worked just fine. Instead of hair spray (which wasn't readily available at the workshop! ) I used transparent spray varnish which helped the grip come in and know is stuck like cement!
The heating element works just fine, so we're ok!

(I just didn't pay enough attention on the little line caused by the mold, which ended up being visible. If i had properly rotated the grip it would show when on the bike. just a slight detail, which will be taken into account when I replace the left grip as well!)
