Whilst looking to see why my throttle cable is knackered I saw that my grips had splits all over them - some of them deep and wide

They're heated grips and I think I'd like to leave them that way - they seem very expensive to replace (at £54+ each) is there a DIY solution?

Hmm, also, do cracked grips cause an MOT failure?

Mine are in the same state:blast and both grips have stopped:( so need to get some fuse wire and try to repair. Job for the weekend methinks as it's getting a little chilly on a morning now

Have seen posted that hairspray is useful when trying to slide grips back on again...anyone any tips please:nenau

Split Grips

I had the same problem.

I baulked at the price of replacing them and thought that changing the rubbers would be a bit of a bugger.

I therefore did the following (Please see attached pics)

Taped up torn grip with insulating tape.
Fitted Grip Puppies over the the top. (Please search for Grip Puppies for details, but I considered them a cheap and effective repair)

The heat still gets through, so hopefully this will see me through the winter and maybe will sort out a 'proper' repair next spring!

Speak to Motorworks. I was in the same situation a few years back with my 1150. They provided me with just the grips (rubbers). I carefully cut the old grips off and fitted the new ones over the heating elements/wires. Wasnt a difficult job and is certainly cheaper then getting the grip assemblys complete. Hope this helps.

Rubbers

These are easy to doo, no need to buy anything expensive just get two piars of rubbers from any shop (make sure they are the right size and just use the throttle one of each pair. Use a pair of side cutters to cut the old ones off and just slide on the new. Do.'t use ant adheisive as it's not required and next time yopu do it it will make them very hard to get off. Look in the font of wisdom or on the advnturer site.

grips

Hi,
Did mine in April.
Motorworks do the replacements for about 15 quid a pair, posted. make sure you tell them they are for heated grips cos you need 2 of the same hand( can't remember which though...i think it was 2 left hand ones?) And yes, hairspray works a treat to fit them(mountain bike trick) :clap.
Regards,
Dave

Repaired

Well I've managed to repair the fine wire that winds around the bar on both sides, now work:thumb Suprised mesen!

I've put some clear nail varnish over the repair and tomorrow will wrap some insulating tape around the bars to protect it when I slide the grips back on.

Hopefully all will be well and I don't break the repair:blast

That's exactly what I did to my broken left H/G, 5yrs ago, & it's still working fine.

Repaired with cricket bat handle rubber

My 1150 have the 1200 heated grips which is smooth and not ribbed. I simply use the rubber sleeve handle you as used on cricket bats. At ZAR19 (probably 1 Euro) for both i do this once a year. The sun here in South Africa does mess up the handle grips quickly.
