HEATED GRIPS WARRANTY?

while out last saturday noticed my left hand heated grip had stopped working, i felt smug that i was wise enough to take out bmw warranty and that the issue would be delt with. i have spoke to clarks (brum) and they feel it may not be covered(switch gear) promised a phone call still waiting. can anyone tell me if they have had this problem and suggest the best course of action, thanks in advance

I've never heard of heated grips being referred to as switchgear before but all the dealer or you can do is call the warranty company

Has the dealer identified the the heated grip as being at fault?

Heated Grips are classed as an accessory not switchgear.The on/off button is switchgear don't let them shaft you unless its the control part

I had an intermittent problem with my heated grips (2010 GS1200) after about 12000 miles. Dealer could not locate fault as it would work most of the time, but just some days it would not switch them on. Then an hour later it would work. Dealer updated software the first time. It was then fine for a few months until I really needed them, they did not switch on. Back to dealer. They replaced the grips on both sides, no charge.Bike was still in initial warranty though. HtH

Don't think heated grips or associated wiring switching is "wear and tear" or consumables".

Mine failed and were not covered by warranty - also the grip was "only" £80 - less than £100 excess.

Warranty apparently excludes most small electrical items such as sensors, heated grips and all the other shit that goes wrong regularly

But at least it will cough up when your FD fails or the ABS controller burns out

It is covered, mine packed up AND it was the control. changed no arguments with extended warranty.

You're both right. The insured warranty coverage includes "all electrical control units" (see below) but DOES NOT mention heated grip elements as being covered, so they're not.

Timely reading this...my rh heated grip has just stopped working....will find out on Monday if its covered on my extened warranty..

well not we have a set and half mate just got back from clarks bmw left hand fixed under warranty no questions asked took less then an hour. sorry forgot to ask what had failed have lost all intrest in spanners just like to ride the thing these days, but i did notice bike as new left hand grip. hope this helps zappa. have you had a little rain up your way mate?

Just had bike in for service and mentioned that LH grip doesn't heat up.... told no probs - sorted under extended warranty.......]

called yesetrday to say it now wasn't, so £80 smackers....wtf....

Please can I have your wonky old grip that wont heat.

If you take off the switch cover you will see the heated grip electrical connector. When it stops working and there is power at the connector you know its the grip. If there is no power at the connector, the fault is further up the system.
