Heated Grips

If you can find what exactly is wrong there may be a fix. Check whether you have current across the heating element itself. If it is a break within the element itself then you can solder it back up (there is a thread on this somewhere either here or on ADV)

Holaaa

As they say, search is your friend.

There are two possibilities, either you've fractured one of the cables leading into the grip or you've burnt a part of the track on the printed film element. If you're lucky you'll be able to see a broken wire in the channel alongside the throttle tube , but if it's a burnt track then you'll need to get the grip off (which is an @rse cos they're glued quite firmly) to see where it is and bridge it with a blob of solder or short length of thin wire.

I have looked at the left hand grip and no power registers at the connector?

And ideas where to go next?

Cheers

The left one is easy to change and not very expensive. Mine failed on the printed circuit board for some reason. I tried cutting the grip off but its very well bonded to the heating element.
My opinion is to buy a new one complete with rubber grip.
The right one is a lot more expensive and may be worth fixing.

I think the problem lies somewhere else, I have no power at the connector that goes the the left grip so the problem seems not to be with the grip. The cable then disappears into the bike wiring.

Snap, my left one went, circuit board fried when i took it apart. Called Motorworks and received a replacement in the post a few days later. Think it was around the £50 mark. Took me 20 min to replace.....Saved the labour charge.

I think the grips are not powered up until the engine is running. If there is a short on the grip causing the resistance to change is this detected by the lambus system (it detects things like broken bulbs or overloads on the accessory socket etc) and the power then switched off. Its a very clever system but perhaps beyond most home electrical tests unless you are sure what you are doing.

Have you checked the resistance of the grip at the connector yet? You should get 8 to 12 ohms. If you get hundreds or thousands of ohms, or an open circuit, the problem is most likely that part of the heating element track has failed/fractured, or maybe a dry-joint on the connection of the wires to the track (under the grip).

Soldered repair then required as Greggers has said.

Bit of a bugger to do as you need to carefully file/sand off the waterproof resin covering the track or else your solder won't stick - DAMHIK! My grip disintegrated when I tried to remove it so I had to get a cheap pair (£5 from J&S Accessories) and use the throttle side grip (due to the grip tube on the bike).

Both heated grips failed

Chaps
Just fired up wife's F650 anniversary and found both heated grips failed.
Any common faults /causes before I start getting spanners out?

Happy new year by the way :beerjug:
