I know this has been done to death but has anyone managed to get BMW to do anything about the heated grips on the 2013 & 2014 R1200GS?
Mine are so useless I find it hard to actually use my bike in this cold weather and I have never had that with any other bike. I have had mine tested by the supplying dealer twice and although they perform within the parameters of temperature the BMW staff are only too aware they are not fit for purpose.

Is there an alternative option if BMW are ignoring this problem or am I just stuck with the bike until I change to a manufacturer who has some Customer Care?

I had mine tested and they replaced the throttle grip like for like, but no they will only fit 2015 ones if I pay for them......:augie

I'm going to get mine updated to the 2015 ones now bikes out of warranty, love the bike but not the exclusive 'aftercare' supplied by Bmw..

My dealer has stated that the updated grips from 2015/16 cannot be retrofitted to the 2013/14, something to do with different resistance and the Canbus not being compatible.
I don't want to spend over £14k on a bike and fit £60 Oxford grips with a big handlebar control when I've already paid way over that for integrated grips that are not fit for purpose. BMW Customer Service declared it is not a fault or issue as they've never heard of this and it must be a 'personal' problem. He also said if it was an issue then BMW would have issued a recall for the problem, I said no they wouldn't, they would make a commercial decision on which cost the least- recalls or deny and settle the odd one here and there and they would stick to this. Most of these bikes are coming up to their warranty period and the problem will then disappear. BMW CC said they were sorry I felt like that but that was not their policy, I asked him if he wanted to discuss steering dampers and potential safety recalls but he didn't.

Some owners have fitted them without issue, but then again I have a replacement horn that should work but on my bike it trips the canbus.

Steering dampers??????? What's the story there?????

The real pisser is the cost! a minimum of £250. It does not cost this much to manufacture, they could easily supply and fit for £125 at customers risk.

Spend the money saved on thicker gloves and remember how BMW looked after you.... next time your bike is due for change!

BMW do not give a flying f*ck while the GS is the best selling bike on the planet.

Are you sure about that? They'll replace the engines on bikes with a bit of corrosion, to keep their customers happy.;)

Rukka Dual Chamber winter gloves are the answer . I use mine every day even in minus 4 and my hands stay warm :thumby: Agreed the Grips arn't great , better on my TC , but my T Max has no heated grips and the Gloves make a big difference

First LC bikes resulted in the deaths of a couple of journalists, BMW denied an issue but miraculously it became a standard fitment the following year. This is how they deal with potential life threatening components no wonder they couldn't give a shit about something as trivial as heated grips that aren't fit for purpose.

A couple of journalists died? As a result of the lack of a steering damper? Do you work for the daily mail?

No I don't work for any publication. Can't believe you are unaware of this story and BMW's avoidance of the issue or the fact they altered the front end design before delivering the 2013 bikes.
Perhaps you're just one of those blinkered riders who only rate 'their' bike. This gets away from the point of the thread and BMW's reluctance to accept responsibility for a poorly designed part of what is a good bike. Paying over £200 for an option that doesn't work and having to buy expensive gloves to use your 'do it all' bike in cold weather is not reasonable. And why do some dealers offer a 2015 upgrade option when others say their incompatible?

The grips on the 2015 are very hot, a big improvement, I cannot see that the bike can't take the upgrade, but anyway failing that, save your money and get some heated gloves, heated gloves are much more comfortable than any heated grips.

I firmly agree with PH1969. I have had a fair bit of communication with BMW customer services and my dealer and have been given various bits of spin. The usual " the later grips will not work on earlier bikes", "we are working on a solution" etc etc.

BMW have persistently lied over this issue and their MO is clear. They have put out the corporate line to all dealers and are going to tough it out until all early bikes are out of warranty and the issue fades away. A couple of honest dealers have broken ranks and fitted the later grips and got their knuckles rapped because of it.

Shameful !

I'm aware that one rider died, but not two. And was it ever proved that it was at the fault of BMW? If you read all the reports, you will see that rider error was the cause.

Rather than whinging on here, why not develop a decent relationship with a dealer that knows how to communicate with BMW? They are out there.;)

I think that all the shit heated grips from the 2014 MY that they had left over are fitted on the XR as mine are no better than they were on the GSA.
